You CAN absogoddamnlutely make up for lack of cache memory with clock speed. Take that Q9300 and ramp it up to 3.5 or 3.6GHz, and hell yeah it'll be beating that Q9450 in most (oh holy fuck, exceptions!) applications.

I know this is a synthetic benchmark but it's impossible to really measure real world performance.

Look at that. 3.33GHz on the E2160 and it is within 1 point of the E6850, which has 4 times the amount of L2 cache memory. The E2160, with its mere 1MB of L2 cache is nearly on par with a CPU costing 4 times as much money at their respective times of release and needs just 333MHz more than the E6850 cranks out stock to do so. What's that you say? "Oh but Cale, golly gophers sir that isn't a white paper from Intel themselves! Surely it is flawed and therefore should be taken with a grain of salt!" Maybe, but you go find me another half-decent way of comparing performance.

Again, tell me why it's a bad idea? You'll have a very, very small number of CPUs that really do die prematurely. My Athlon (Thunderbird core) 800 ran at 1.1GHz for almost 5 years before I retired it, and those were about the hottest things ever.

Regardless of whether or not something in the CPU is being damaged, if it does not affect the end user in any way, explain to me why that is detrimental.

Overclocking is absolutely a fine idea if you know what you're doing and realize the consequences (or lack thereof, 99% of the time).

Do you have any evidence for this claim other than a benchmark that's based largely on (surprise!) clock speed? Tell me, what exactly is a "point"?

You're just pulling stuff out of your ass now.

I never said the CPUs would die prematurely - I suppose it could but that would take years. What will happen is that it will become more unstable. You know that thing people love to call "OS Decay"? Overclocking is a major factor.

Dude, you do realize that you're supposed to put the quoted material BEFORE your response, right? Otherwise how the fuck are people supposed to know what you're replying to? People don't like to read conversations backwards.

I like to to put the quoted material AFTER my response. People that are current with the thread dont need to read it first or twice. Its more efficient. I learnt it from the borg your heros.
That's what I do.

I'm sure you think that's very clever, but it's effectively the same as saying that you like to fill your pants with mulch before you leave home in the morning.

Making fun of clichés != failing at quoting

So I picked up my PC on Tuesday and I tried to install Vista 64-bit and it wasnt detecting my SATA HD. Turns out the douche who assembled it connected it as RAID and not SATA so I had to take it back because they put a sticer on the back that if removed voids the warranty. I got it back today and now Im having another problem. When I plug the DVI connection into the PC and turn it on I dont get any picture on my Monitor. It just keeps flashing back and forth between Digital signal and Analog...seems like it cant pick up the signal but Im on my old computer and its working fine so it cant be the monitor. Must be the new video card. Now I have to take it back again tomorrow...Im so fucking pissed!

I make alotta sense

No I always quote like this because it makes sense just like purchasing an LCD televisions and a PS3 for gaming at a price of $2000 makes more sense than purchasing a gaming workstation for $2000. Its unforunate that you can't see the clarity in my argument. Ive decided I can accept your disabilty its something you were born with.

BTW Im using my computer for a whole shitload of things that you cannot do on a PS3

Can you use Photoshop on a PS3? What about a quick check of the email.

A PC is much more convenient.
Its personal preferance.

im not saying a PS3 replaces the neeed for a computer. I am saying that for gaming it makes more sense to buy a big ass LCD and hook it up to your PS3 and connect a standard PC to it rather than spend all that money on a Gaming machine.

And what part of "I don't really play games" in the original post did you not understand?

Crazy as it may be, some people use their computers for purposes other than playing games!
