i've never met the guy, but i've heard some say he's an asshole and others say he's a nice guy. did u have a direct encounter with hiM? |
I saw him at disneyworld. Apparently the reason he was so bitter is because Walt Disney molested his girlfriend, Minnie.

i personally am tired of him because he is not that good - he has gotten hugely popular making music that many here feel is just simple, tired, and samey. I really like faxing berlin and jaded but as time went on I saw that for the most part his songs consist of either retreads of faxing berlin or generic farty house which I already detested long before I knew the name deadmau5. (besides the Harder Better Faster Stronger Remix - thats still a fun track imo)
And then when he gets an essential mix he uses all his own tracks? not cool. Some of the angst in that thread was I think more a general disdain for how far the essential mix has fallen though, not just hating on the mau5. Sorry, but when Deadmau5 and Steve Aoki get an EM, it is no longer the 'Legendary' Essential mix.
as far as the hatred here on TA, i feel some are a little over the top by insulting him personally, but the fact remains that he is a one or two trick pony (very prolific, very good marketing, hardworking, etc) who makes for the most part pretty blah dance music, and people just rip on him because the music really is not worth the hype.
No offense, and there's stuff Deadmau5 has made in the past that I like, but for the most part I'm just tired of it. But like all fads there are stupid people who will go nuts for it, and more power to him making the music he likes and getting gigs and making $$. But here on TA we do not take kindly to sellouts, and that's why the hatred. |
You more or less summed up my point of view in your post.
Faxing Berlin still remains my his best work. It was a really fresh sound and to me, showed great promise as to where he could go in dance music. Jaded and Not Exactly were good but I already started getting very bored. Since then, every production has been a carbon copy of the faxing berlin style or else dreadful electro house. The repeated production and release of the same sound, simply cos it is making money is not going to gain much respect with knowledgable fans of that particular music type.
Although i dont know him personally, I would say that from interviews, stories and other things I have read from/about him, he certianly doesnt come across as the most likeable character and in my opinion, on more occasions than not, actually gives people more and more reason to dislike him. Take his recent Resident Advisor for example. In this interview, he states how he never followed dance music, never went to gigs, says his idea of hell would to be in the middle of a big crowd at a dance gig and then goes on to mock his own fans for enjoying themselves while using drugs and listening to his music. Other comments over the last year have included saying things like DJing will be a thing of the past and his new live performance will set a new platform for dance music, has openly admitted that he is continuing with the same sound cos its making him money etc. There are numerous other incidents in which he has shot himself in the foot – a poor essential mix, rumours about him refusing to play cos the promoter didn’t have his hot chocolate, refusing to play at a different gig cos the line-up included an artist who previously made a joke production about his tracks etc etc etc.... So for someone who has only been successful for less than a year to be coming out with all this stuff, it is clearly not going to help his credentials with die hard EDM fans. And there we have the hatred.
Although to be perfectly honest, seen as he was never into dance music before hitting the big time, I sincerely doubt he cares if the EDM forums and real fans of the music don’t like him. He is selling records, filling venues and has become known to many clueless part-time dance fans – which I reckon is what he was aiming for.
