meehh...
I thought Cox was OK...but seriously, I don't go to hear a $30 K plus DJ drop Grindhouse and Smoke Machine anymore...we need a little more originality then that, especially at his level/experience at DJing and producing.
I don't think any amount of looping and effects can make cliche tracks sound all that interesting.
Its really a shame that the room was a quarter or third full for Luca Bacchetti ( a 9/10 set IMO, compared to Cox's 6/10 show) and it was this RAMMED for Carl Cox....rammed to a point where it was not really enjoyable. The best sound was on the main floor but it was impossible to move there. The view/sound from the balcony on 2nd floor was fine but as already mentioned, thru-fair traffic was unbearable.
Kudos to the management at Circa, however. They are focusing on bringing better DJs this year and its is noticeable. I hope they keep building the on their success with good cutting edge music as I think they have a better chance at reaching a wider audience of music lovers and not just party sketchers who will listen to any loud pounding and flashing lights regardless of the quality of music as long as they are fucked up.
Names like Carl Cox help draw first timers to a new club which in itself is useful at this point...
