Going to clubs, parties and festivals are pretty big ticket items on the "things I currently like to do" - and ideally, since I have such a great time at this things, and especially more special events like Mutek, Eclipse, Harvest, etc which become some of the highlights of my year - being able to share these things with the person I love is a really big bonus.

Or, if they wanted me to NOT go to Mutek because they were not into it, and tried to pull some piss-ass power play to stop me from going - that'd piss me off and WOULD be a deal breaker. While I can live with them not being that into it but still being fine with me going, having them stopping me from going is not something I'd put up with.

But thankfully, my current BF has a a love for techno/edm/minimal music. Hell, our first real conversation was "OMG, you like minimal too?" then geeking out about various record labels / producers / DJs that we like (Finding other gay men into the same kind of music as me in Toronto seems to be a rather difficult thing to do).

and hell, my ex-BF was the one that sort of started me on the path of getting into this music (was a psytrance head prior - so I've lucked out in getting BFs that have some pretty top-notch taste in music, heh)

Personally, I couldn't. But when it comes to EDM, I don't have to be dating someone who loves the exact same taste in EDM as me. My bf and I have fairly different tastes in EDM, yet agree on some styles. We both come from punk music backgrounds too, which is interesting. But he's definitely not a fan of my NKOTB obsession.

It can be done.

Trust is key. The EDM scene is a completely different beast compared scenes in many respects.

I am not, and I personally would not want to be with someone who is directly in the EDM scene. It would be too much for me to handle. A balance needs to be set and followed through with. I feel that a balance between this lifestyle and a “normal” lifestyle (I use normal loosely because everyone has their own definition) is needed. Beside’s engulfing myself with the tunes when I go out, I also try to work on, and have maintained lasting relationships which I bring out of the scene and into my personal life as well. For myself this is important to me because knowing who I am with, spending those late nights away from home have helped build that trust that is needed.

I get times alone with my friends, she with hers. And the times we spend together are strictly times together without the scene creeping in.

i mix at high volume and she does not mind...i achieved this by starting to buy her a few vinyls of the stuff she does like. She does not want to learn to mix, but she has taken a big interest in records which is pretty cool. Record shopping as a couple is fun as hell, even if we spend a lot of time making fun of each others music.

And acceptance. I accept when she wants quiet, she accepts when I want loud (and helping me get my decks 3 ½ years ago was a sign of acceptance ). My acceptance in return to her is keeping the music in moderation when she wants quiet.

If she likes rock and such, sure. If she likes hip-hop/R&B exclusively, total no-go.

I once took out a girl on a date and things were going well until we got back in the car to drive her home. I was playing a house music mix CD and after 2 minutes she turned the radio off. I said to her "oh u want me to turn it down? okay"...i turn it back on at a lighter volume...then she replies " no man turn it off i can't listen to that shit"...My reaction was "oh yeah...whats better..." then she turns on the radio and starts blasting raggaeton for fucks sake. I laughed and put on back the house music and said something along the lines of "my car, my music,"...this started a 10 minute war of her turning the music off...and me turning it back on. Dropped her off home never spoke to that bitch again...

I can deal with someone who has different tastes but if you wont let me enjoy what I like then you can fuck right the hell off.
