it's interesting to see the cultural significance of particular alcohol based on the "grains" that's grown in that region. so russians have their vodka, sake for the chinese, tequila in mexico, cachaca (sp?) in brazil.

definitely something i should've researched more in college (when i had the time for it).

Quality control on a corporate level only goes so far as they are legally liable - this is why people will prefer to buy official when given a choice, especially when it comes to personal safety, even when it means they may have to pay twice as much for a less potent product. Pharmeceutical Corps. are given their minimal guidelines for safety and adhere to them most of the time, so long as federal approval is in place, even if actual testing isn't extensive. As with any business though, the prospect of authentic approval is a wheel able to be greased by money, even if the consequences are dire so far as the far-removed consumer is concerned. Drugs are recalled all of the time, scripts discontinued because somebody freaked the fuck out or went sidewalk-diving, you just won't hear about it as the great indictment of our prescription culture because it makes for bad news. There's really no reason to trust a faceless corporation over somebody you know personally, that's my only point.

If you trust a company or brand-name to deliver a safer and more quality product merely because you're paying more though, I think you're a tad mistaken, especially when it comes to things that you actually put into your body.
