Well what the hell are you doing then? Go play it. Now! GO GO GO!

No arguments here about the SNES being #1 console ever =] Genesis, PS1, NES, Dreamcast, and Saturn being some other of my faves.

I'm one of the people who went out and bought the MGS4 edition PS3 console just because I needed the game at launch, I have played through 1-3 (and part of the ways into the original on NES, though I have yet to make it through the MSX Metal Gears) and consider myself a big fan. Even was a fan of the twisty and almost completely nonsensical story of MGS2.

Well anyways, the 4th game has some of the best gameplay in the series. I like the top down view of the old games and was worried that camera control would get in the way. But it wasn't too bad, even if simultaneously running and aiming with the camera was a bit rough, and the game encouraged you to play more action-oriented.

The game was absolutely stunning to look at, though I wish it had a locked framerate. The big flaw was, like RJT said, you felt you were watching a movie more than ever with the game... and after act 2, the game fell apart. Act 3 had the most boring part in the game, following the spy... then there was a cool on-rails shooting part broken up with long load times. Boss fights weren't as clever as MGS3's, either. Act 4 was cool for the nostalgia element, but was over too quickly. And the less said about Act 5, the better.

And now we're doing top 10 lists? Hmm... I can't narrow my list down so here's a number of them:

Super Smash Bros Brawl
Phantasy Star 1, 2, and 4
Rez
Star Ocean 2
Final Fantasy 4, 5, 6, 7
Dragon Quest 5
Valkyrie Profile
Sin and Punishment
Gunstar Heroes
Zelda: LTTP
Super Metroid
ESPGaluda
Street Fighter 3 Third Strike
Mega Man 2, 3
Contra
Lufia 2
Skies of Arcadia
Terranigma

If I had a DS, I would! It seems everybody and their grandma already has one, maybe I'll take the plunge thanks to this game alone.

And earlier in this thread, I said I would never buy a video game system for one game alone....

And very nice list, Mr. G+W. I've always wanted to check out Sin and Punishment, but I'm not really into the import scene and the game has yet to have an American release. (Not yet at least...Nintendo has promised a WiiConnect release sometime soon..)

I guess I'm glad I never picked the game up. I almost did, but I assumed it would be like MGS2.

A "game" where you watch more than you play, isn't really much of a game. It's more like an interactive movie.

Sin and Punishment can be downloaded off of the Virtual Console... but if you want to buy the original N64 game, the dialogue is all in English (with Japanese subtitles), only thing not translated in the N64 game is the main menu and the ending. The VC release translates both of these parts. I of course highly recommend it.

with the cut scene thing, would you just prefer to have a bit less watching time and more playing time? or do you not like the cut scenes as a way of telling the story? i've only played this very briefly at a friend's place and didn't get far enough to see any cut scenes so can't really judge.

I'd just prefer more time playing is all - I hope no one mistakes my irritation with them for criticizing them as somehow poorly done.

They are incredibly well done, there's just far, far too many of them. The last two and a half acts are basically movies with poorly designed action sequences.

For example, in Act V you watch around a half hour of cutscenes, then are dropped into the main "play section" of the game - which is basically just designed to be prohibitively difficult so it seems as if one is getting more play time out of it, when in reality they're just dying in the same section and replaying that one bit over and over again.

This is followed by more cut scenes, a boss battle that was actually probably my favorite of the game (Screaming Mantis), though perhaps that was for nostalgias sake, and then a section I can only describe as "running straight down a hallway with either nothing to do or as many little robots as they can cram on screen at once attacking you" that goes on much longer than it needs to, culminates in more cutscenes, and finally the last "boss battle" that isn't really a boss battle at all - i.e. if you lost the last "boss battle" even once you should check and make sure you aren't retarded, because you probably are.

The ratio of gameplay to cutscenes, especially in Act 5 (which isn't even technically the last act), was absurd.

That being said, the ending is a Metal Gear Solid fans wet dream. Not going to lie, my favorite little subplot in the game involved Sunny, and seeing how she fit into the end brought a huge smile to my face.

I dunno, in general, the story is just outstanding, which is technically probably the only reason to play any MGS in the first place.

One last random gripe - the save system has always sucked in MG games. How the fuck are they four games in and not letting you pretty much save progress wherever?

Any and every game should let you save wherever and whenever you want. Forcing a challenge upon the gamer by making them complete a certain section or get to a particular point is not what I call fun...more like aggravating.

You have to enable media sharing from the computer that will be acting as the server. You can it through Windows Media Player but there are other free media servers (like TVersity) you can download as well.

I learned most everything from the official Playstation forums. You can probably get all of your questions answered here:
