Once a friend of mine was smoking in an underground garage. Some guy drives up to him, opens the window and asks him to stop smoking. He says "are you some sort of security or a cop?" He says "No i just dont like breathing your smoke." He says "tell you what, you stop emitting your carcinogenic car fumes and forcing me to breathe them in here, and ill put out my smoke"

ROFLMAO, I've pulled that one myself, not that I smoke cigarettes, mind you.

I understand the theory behind this rule, and support the end-goal. That is, protecting kids from second hand smoke that they don't really have a choice in breathing or not.

But please. When do the rules stop? They can't be enforced anyway. Cops will often turn the other way when people are smoking POT right in front of them, why the hell does anyone think they'll step up and fine someone for smoking cigarettes?

Even if this bi-law is passed, it'll be so far down the priority list for police that it will still effectively be legal to smoke near parks and playgrounds. Have you driven by a cop while talking on your cellphone recently? I have, a few times, even had an OPP car following me for 5 minutes while I was on the phone with my friend, they just don't care.

There are so many other, more important, problems that the police should be focusing on that I wonder why city hall would want to create even more work for the already understaffed police force. Drug dealing, shootings, muggings, etc. etc. What's the point of creating a law that can't be enforced?

I fully support the ban in workplaces, indoors period, public places of business (bars, clubs, etc)...but the outdoors is the outdoors.

You're grossly overestimating the dangers of second hand smoke in the 5 seconds you're walking up to the doorway. It's a silly thing to be even concerned about - the air you're breathing outside that door has many, many more pollutants in it, but you don't hold your breath outside, do you?

There are a lot of things out there that will kill you. Some a lot faster than others. The odds of dying from "second hand smoke inhaled while walking through the entrance of a building" are pretty slim. Especially compared to all the other things. I'd worry more about those.
