Interesting you say that the disengagement of one's environment is more of a trance or house syndrome, because Many of the original clubs like Paradise Garage in New York were for gay guys to enjoy themselves and forget the outside world where they were persecuted, and the Northern Soul clubs in England allowed the clubbers to forget the harsh life they were enduring in mining towns with little else to do. I disagree with you; I believe that clubbing and all electronic music is about disengaging from the real world in a sense.

It depends on your definition of "an agenda" I suppose. I was talking more about songs that preach against war or some other major issue. Being mostly non-vocal, dance music doesn’t tend to do this.

i suspect we are talking about the same thing from two different points of view as i said, the original clubbing developed partly (mostly?) because of bad circumstances, be it work life, the political situation or social problems. gay guys partying in a club because they are persecuted elsewhere is a political statement for me. they show to the other guests that they are regular people who also want to enjoy themselves. the disengangement which i criticise is because of NON-awareness of politics and social problems, just getting drunk and have fun in an ignorant way is what i mean. and the latter is what i associate with the trance and commercial house "scene"

You're making perfect sense. I agree with you, the original ideals of clubbing have probably been lost. Over here, this isn't unique to trance and handbag house either.

I can see how this would piss people off, but being a relatively un-political person who is pretty happy with the way things are run within this country, I'm content enough with clubbing to be just another form of entertainment with no particular meaning behind it.

However, what does piss me off is the way people have abused this form of entertainment; it's become a mainstream activity which is no longer so special. Without drugs and alcohol, many people wouldn't attend. Nothing wrong with getting intoxicated, but it annoys me the way clubs seem to have become used for that almost exclusively. So many people just aren't there for the music.
