According to Matthias (that's his real name, obviously hiding his German roots to pretend he's Dutch) there's no such thing as Trance, because everything is Electronic Music. So we can eliminate Trance off the list of genre's now.

you see this debate is the reason we have all these redundant subgenres like progressive trance, epic trance, uplifting trance, classic trance...it's all nonsense. at the end of the day it's dance music, not something you sit in a concert hall and listen to. labelling things limits creativity...in my opinion if it's 4 on 4, aggressive, melodic, and emotional...it's trance. i don't think we need to define trance. if all these artists and djs started defining trance, it would have died ages ago. leaving it open to interpretation is what drives the music forward and allows it to evolve.

trance has died out for some yrs now...the shit thats coming out nowadays is complete garbage!!! the reason why im not a trance head anymore. im glad pvd is changing styles and i msut say he throws down some nasty house...

but to not classify yourself as a trance dj when thats what pretty much it was that made you who you are is simple ignorance. and yes indeed he has supported A LOT of the 'cheesey trance shit' for quite some time so thats also wrong to be bashing at it when he falls victim of his own words.

hmmm that's a tough one...i do think there should be a distinction between those 3 because they have different roots and have evolved differently (although they're probably evolving to sound very similar). still structurally, house, trance, and techno are very different, while the distinction between uplifting and tech trance is structurally insignificant (i.e. you could still stick a tech trance tune right after an uplifting tune and not have it sound bad)

It's not that deep. Shit even I have on my myspace profile that I love EDM.. for all the fuktards who think I listen to "techno" - which I do.. but not their idea of techno.

A little off topic... but i REALLY enjoyed Jaytech's set when he opened for A&B in Feb. The kind of stuff he played was very unique, from all the openers/djs that I've seen over the last few years in nyc. Any ideas what all those mystery ID's were?

I started listening to EDM back in mid 2004, so I missed the glory days, but back then all i really had to listen to were PVD/Tiesto sets from 2000-2002. Very different sound from what is being played now...

I really have no other input, since I don't produce or DJ and i have no idea how complex/much effort go into certain 'cheese' vocal tracks vs. the good stuff. *sigh* lol.

lol it was a good set. u should check the track list on the review thread...i recognized a lot of the tracks from jaytech's podcast...so if u check those out u might get some info about the tracks

Well yes and no. Trance needs to have feeling. I think some chillout could be trance. Hell, Pink Floyd music can be labeled trance. That's just my opinion. But that's the point, it's all someone's opinion, doesn't really matter, in the grand scheme of things. Fuck genres and styles and subgenres. In some of these trance-related production forums, I don't have the patience to peek my head through for more than a few seconds without closing the window. Too many kids (and apparently PVD) focused on the small details that don't matter, when they could be channeling all that time and energy into making good music.

But at the end of the day, while PVD is getting caught up in semantics and interviews about what genres and subgenres there are, there are little kids in Germany, Holland, Poland, Argentina, and the USA doing what he does a lot better than he does. I think he's a bit bitter he's reaching the end... After the DJMag100, there's no way to go but down..

so pvd is complaining about the scene. at least he is trying to do something about it. what about the second part of the interview that we are all forgetting about. personally, i can't wait to hear his full orchestra recording. thus proving eco's point, pink Floyd could be called trance.
