Don't get me wrong, it is your perogative and if it makes you happier, it makes you happier. I believe that it is nothing but a placebo effect. If your relationship is strong, it is strong without the ring.
I think it is outdated because:
1. it is a religious practice (in its roots, even though it is not always done this way these days.), religion is out dated.
2. look at divorce statistics. Marriage hardly means anything more than normal committed unmarried people and their relationships.
3. All that money spent on the party is better spent on your home and the future of your children (see college funds). You get more back from these things than any expensive party with tons of people you are not even that close to.
It is just my opinion.
Thank god my girlfriend is cool enough to love me without needing to run around with a big rock on her finger to prove it to everyone that does not matter
