Last time I checked, 1000 people a day are being sent to the hospital in the USA due to dog bites. There are also roughly 40,000 deaths a year on our government owned roads. Interesting that we don't see people running around like chickens with their heads cut off with these types of statistics but all of a sudden we are worried about people who are dying from a flu virus. Might I add, the flu has been killing people for quite some time. Why all of a sudden is this specific type of flu a big deal?

You are just as retarded as Theresa. Read the rest of the thread. Normal flu strains don't kill healthy, middle-aged people; this one does.

Yet again... source?

People continue to claim that this is affecting healthy middle-aged people however, I have still not been directed to a source.

Pablo Kuri, a Mexican epidemiologist, said three of the dead were children: a 9-year-old girl, a 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy. Four were older than 60. The other nine were between 21 and 39 — unusual ages for people to die from flu because they tend to have stronger immune systems.

I've never seen my screen name used these many times in one post. I think I love you.

Many of the news articles are over dramatizing the situation, or misrepresenting the facts/numbers. It's all to get more reads and more hits because it's all about making money.

The "hype" is coming from the media, plain and simple. If it weren't for the insane coverage over this ridiculous thing, Egypt would not be killing pigs, and Argentina would not be banning flights to Mexico. People would have gone on with their daily lives being none the wiser.

Seriously now, I don't care for the news sources and what they do because the behavior you're mentioning is always expected, no matter the current event/s. Media will always do what they need to do.

TBH, I care more about the worsening rep of Mexico (as if it was significantly better before) and its citizens. Soccer teams are being discriminated against and isolated in international competitions. But even this I expected and knew was coming.

The "hype" is coming from the media outside Mexico. The country just took precautions to stop the spread of the disease. I'll even say they reacted late to the situation.

You should google-news José Ángel Córdova (Mexican Health Minister) to get some information on the cases. I know, again from news in Spanish, the disease has affected more young people, specially female. But I don't have a source to give you the complete health background check of each case. I doubt you can get that.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the worry here - as with most viral outbreaks - is not necessarily the current form, but what it could become should it mutate slightly. It's already proven to be a nasty version of the flu - if it suddenly changes, and we aren't prepared, then all of the hype and the worrying will be completely justified.

Number of deaths is not relevant. waiting for hundreds of thousands of deaths to raise an alarm would be irresponsible.

The deal is its a flu pandemic (not the seasonal flu that comes around every year).. pandemics are relatively rare.. flu pandemics can be VERY serious.

Those factors alone are enough to justify the precautions being taken.

Yes, a normal flu can absolutely kill someone and it does to more then 30,000 people a year, maybe more.

I love thread about scientific things, when the majority of people arguing on both sides have no background in the particular field of science, and yet claim to know whats really going on. Sources for everything, people. You don't cite a source, you're wrong.

That's just it--it hasn't been "proven" to be a particularly virulent strain. Indeed, there's scant evidence to suggest as much. Most cases that we've detected have required little or no treatment, and it's very likely that there are a large number of additional cases that have gone unnoticed precisely for that reason.

Now, of course it's too early to say for certain that the strain isn't particularly dangerous, and it's certainly possible that the virus could change and become more dangerous, so there's definitely some merit in making reasonable preparations to guard against the possibility that this will turn out to be more dangerous than it presently appears.

That said, some of the nonsense that I've heard about--shutting down schools for weeks because one student reported flu-like symptoms, for instance--falls well outside the range of reasonable preparations. And don't even get me started about the "people" afraid to eat pork...
