Anime is pretty gay, there are very few animes that I really like... and most of those were made before 2000, and a majority of them were made in the mid to late 80's...  Even then, very few are TV series, most are one-off movies, or series of movies. Production quality is superior in movies.
Manga on the other hand is a different thing all together. Compared to other comic industries the Japanese comic industry is huge. Where anime is considered fairly geeky and immature in Japan, lots of people read manga there. The thing I have heard from a lot of people is that Japanese is a fairly hard language to convey lots of emotion in (and having studied it, it seems sort of true) and that comics help add to the emotive respone desired by authors. Thats why you see a huge cross section of topics covered by manga, from kids books to very adult (beyond porn) subjects.
