Yea I dont think I've watched any Pretty Sammy since middle school... 
I still would watch Tenchi Muyo (which Pretty Sammy is a spin off of) if I came across it on TV. I used to be in a Starseige/Tribes clan called House of Jurai, it was pretty cool, so it has a lot of memories to me. Also a couple of the tenchi movies are pretty good.
Tony, at least in the US, SM did start it, but mainly for girls and a lot of them never made the connection to anime since it was so heavily anglicized here. What really did it was Pokemon and then Dragonball Z. Both of those really blew up here (and everywhere) and got people into anime.
Now its more Naruto and the other shit they show on Cartoon Network... most kids dont make the anime connection now with shit like Yu-gi-oh and that other saturday morning crap. Thats a good thing, because those can barely be called cartoons.
