Arbiter is a perfect example. Many posters think he's intelligent (I've seen him complimented endlessly during the years I've been here) but he never toots his own horn. If he does, it's probably in jest; but I've never seen him do that. Everything he posts speaks for itself.

Lira is another great example. winston is not.

I think intelligence is obtainable by all.. provided you start young enough.

If you make the decision before the age of say 10 to strive to be intelligent.. and start reading books, being inquisitive about the world, trying to understand math/formal logic, and develop problem-solving skills you're guaranteed to grow up to be reasonably intelligent.

Unfortunately most people are not taught to value intelligence as children.. or simply never make the choice to cultivate it.

I believe a person's intrinsic intelligence can be nurtured to a certain limit, and that for some people that limit is depressingly low.

I used to be of the opinion that people could increase their intelligence indefinitely. But many people truly are incapable of learning.

The ability to learn, to me, is the ultimate measure of intelligence. You can have an incredibly intelligent person who doesn't know many things, but as soon as you start giving them information, they will soak it up like a sponge, understand, and apply it.

On the flip side, you can have an incredibly stupid person who knows many things. But all that information and it's useless to them. They do not understand the significance of the information, and are therefore, unable to apply it.

I only agree with this partially. I think true intelligence is the ability to work things out for yourself without any prior information or examples. Or, given information, the ability to apply it in a more efficient or effective way.

Most of us can do simple algebra when the concept is explained to us at school, but the really intelligent people work those kinds of things out for themselves because it just seems logical, natural and easy.

That is exactly why I don't study for tests. Someone somewhere worked it out with all of the tools I'm using and since I've looked it over once or twice before there isn't a need. If some other asshat figured it out so can I.
