I actually enjoy Keanu Reeves. But moreso because of his cool aura, not his acting chops. I think he just looks the parts he plays...but he's not meant for Shakespeare.
He was awesome in Speed (why does his performance in this get overlooked...I thought it was perfect for an action movie, and I can't imagine any other actor playing this without making it look...off). He was also good in the Matrix trilogy, Devil's Advocate, A Scanner Darkly, The Gift, Constantine...I think he was perfect for those roles.
But like previous posts have mentioned, it's all about his casting. Roles like Johnny Mnemonic, Hardball, Sweet November, Much Ado About Nothing and Dracula were horrid. And he has a bunch were he is just kind of 'there', and doesn't really add anything. (The Lake House, Feeling Minnesota, Street Kings, etc.)
Anyways...for best and worst acting performances...
Best:
Jim Carrey - The Truman Show : Thought it was perfect for his personality and animated acting style. One of his first dramatic outings as well.
Joe Pesci - Casino : Some may say his Goodfellas performance ousts this one, but I have a hard time picking a favorite. His character in this is fucking wild and does whatever his mind puts him to.
Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump : Cliche, perhaps, but perfectly cast and perfectly acted.
Brad Pitt - 12 Monkeys : He was nominated for an Oscar in conjunction with this part, and I think it was well-deserved. What a crazy performance.
Tommy Lee Jones - anything he's in, but the Fugitive and U.S. Marshals need special mentions.
Val Kilmer - The Saint : I wish Mr. Kilmer was still the star he was 10 years ago, but everybody's career has to come to an end at some point...a very enjoyable performance in an entertaining movie.
I'll have to think a little bit for the worst..
