It's not ignorance, I think you're way too focused on the super small details (such as transients). In the end the only thing that triggers a regular compressor is amplitude, that's just a fact. And I'm saying the same logic of compression applies on everything you compress no matter if it's a single signal or a combines set of signals. In short: compression is compression (duh) but you don't even seem to agree with that. That does not exclude using different compressor settings for different situations unlike you are saying. Of course compression is not only about the amplitude of sounds, but the amplitude is the only thing that is able to trigger a compressor.
Thing is you add all types of insignificant variables into an abstract case which was presented to offer the OP more insight into compression. Instead of making it easier to grasp you're making it harder. A similar analogy would be the following: you're trying to tell me how to build a car. But I've only seen a car once or twice and don't even know how to open the door and get in. That just doesn't work.
- The final result in the OP case would still be the same, both sounds would be attenuated by the same ammount of decibels because it is one signal (or multiple summed into one) and then compressed. Wouldn't you agree?
If not, please elaborate and tell me how one single band compressor can apply different compression ratios on different frequency bands at the same time. If we would have been talking about multiband compressors I would probably have agreed with most you said. But we're not.
