Spain is definitely where its at for a lot of the techno names you would like to see pass through Toronto, I'm keeping my eyes open to see who will be at Fabrik in late March when I am in town, hoping for someone like Varela or Mulero.

God what I would give...

Can you imagine a Ben Sims/Dave Clarke show???

Saw Mills & Clarke at the Int'l Centre in 1998, and that was a pretty entertaining evening. When high calibre Techno jocks get paired up on the same bill there tends to be a fair bit of one-upmanship on the go, which can make for some pretty insane nights. Traxx following Carola at the Masonic Temple was a doozy - Carola didn't want to give up the decks, Melvin just slaughtered the place when he finally took over.

Unless of course, the formula is all written down in The Big Rule Book of Music somewhere, then I stand corrected. Good music crosses boundaries and blurs genres anyways, so who really gives a shit? What difference does it make to you or anyone else?

Fuck this genre, fuck that genre. Sounds like noob talk to me.

Using your logic, let's all just forget about the basic elements of genres!

Who cares whether a club is playing metalcore or terrorcore or deathcore, or house, or electro hop, or trance, or ambient, I mean it's all the same right?

Get a grip.

For the fundamental purpose of people being able to identity, and to compare and contrast different types of music, genres NEED to exist at some basic level.

Using your logic, I mean who cares about DJ names! Good DJs are good DJs, what difference does it make what their names are right?

Having genres for the purposes of identification and organization allows people to discover different types of music, AND to discover DJs who play "good music that blurs genres".

Conversations would regress into this:

"Hey man, I saw a really great DJ last night at this club, it was awesome!"
"What DJ was it?"
"I don't know the name, but who cares, it was a really awesome DJ!"
"What kind of music was it?"
"I don't know, it was just good music!"

on the whole, Toronto is a really dynamic city for electronic music, whether you agree or not. Major international DJs recognize what a great scene and crowd we have here. I for one don't spend my life wishing I were elsewhere.

Some international DJs also don't like playing in Toronto. Your point is?

Whether you like it or not, Toronto does not compare to world-class club cities in terms of being dynamic or exciting.

on the topic of Sims and 'minimal', saw this posted recently on another board, a little note of his that he apparently posted on discogs or sumthing. I wouldn't have put it quite that way but it is worth a chuckle. Pardon the all caps but I just copy & pasted.

quote:
"TO ALL THE PRODUCERS WHO CHANGED THEIR SOUND TO MATCH CURRENT TRENDS AND ‘HOPEFULLY’ SELL UNITS. WHERE’S YOUR HEART? FUCK YOU!

TO ALL THE DJ’S THAT ‘JUMPED SHIP’ TO MINIMAL FOR FINANCIAL REASONS OR EGO ISSUES, WHERE’S YOUR IDENTITY? WHO ARE YOU REALLY? A JUKEBOX, A WEDDING DJ? DO YOU EVEN KNOW? DO YOU PLAY MUSIC JUST BECAUSE IT’S POPULAR? IF COUNTRY AND WESTERN WAS THE NEXT ‘BIG THING’ WOULD YOU PLAY THAT TOO? FUCK YOU!

TO ALL THE NON HARDWORKING, NON SWEATING DJ’S THAT DON’T REALLY MIX, SCARED TO UP THE INTENSITY AND ENERGY LEVELS, WHO OCCASIONALLY PUNCH THE AIR WITH A SMILE LESS CONVINCING THAN AN AIR STEWARDESS, THAT HAVE 50 ‘FRIENDS’ IN THE DJ BOOTH, DRINKING CHAMPAGNE ‘MINCING’ LIKE FOOTBALLERS WIVES, TAKING MORE DRUGS THAN THE CROWD AND THINKING YOU’RE ‘UBER COOL’, HAVE YOU GOT ANY RESPECT AT ALL FOR THE DANCEFLOOR PAYING YOUR WAGES? FUCK YOU!

TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO FORGOT THE RAW STRIPPED TO THE ESSENTIAL BARE BONES MACHINE FUNK OF HOOD, MILLS ETC.. AND DECIDED TO CALL THIS NEW WEAK ASSED MINDLESS, SOULLESS, GROOVELESS SHIT ‘MINIMAL’. FUCK YOU!

DERRICK MAY ONCE FAMOUSLY SAID THAT TECHNO WAS LIKE ‘GEORGE CLINTON AND KRAFTWERK TRAPPED IN AN ELEVATOR’, A PERFECT COMBINATION OF FUNK AND ELECTRONICS , HOW DID THE BULK OF NEW SCHOOL ‘MINIMAL TECHNO’ GET IT SOOO WRONG?? THEY DELETED EVERYTHING BUT THE ELEVATOR. EMPTY, LIFELESS AND NO FUN AT ALL.

FUCK YOU AND FUCK ‘YOUR’ MINIMAL!"

That was a great read! I'm not a huge techno fan, but I have BIG respect for DJs and producers who stay true to themselves, and who stay true to the music and to the essence of what a DJ is.

Sims actually has a FB group called FUCK MINIMAL, which is where I procured the jpg that appears somewhere near the start of this thread.

In another interview, he did mention that he would be open to a night where Techno and mnml were played in the same evening, and was also quite correct when he said that listening to an entire night of DJs playing any one specific genre is tee-dee-uss (boar-ing).

In a Sims set, you'll hear Techno, Electro, House, Hip-Hop and whatever else he sees fit to drop in. It's all Techno to me, which has as much to do with how it's mixed as it does with what's being played.
