My girlfriend jokes that Dr. Pepper would make my music more commercially viable, because of this commercial.

Your post reminded me of it and is also indicative of the prevalent attitude, not just in LA, but here in MI, (and I would suspect numerous else-where's in the continental US) where this commercial was widely shown.

Long Beach, CA is the Hip Hop capital of the world. Trying to find a club around me that plays Trance, Electro, whatever is a litlle harder to come by. Rarely do you hear our type of music, unless you travel up to LA. Even LA is still Hip Hop heavy. The Armin's and Tiesto ways of doing things is what selling. At least in America. Remember Trance is pretty new here.

Think of this, When Tiesto first hit the scene, what was his style, or what was he writing? Now look at his latest album. Sure many think he's a sell out, but he is trying to venture out. The Kaliedoscope album is huge America. I can't even count how many requests I get in a night, for Escape Me and I Will Be Here. If these are the kind of songs that put butts on the dancefloor, you have to go with it. If a club owner asked me to spin a 3 hour set of nothing but Tiesto tunes, well that's what I have to do.

Trust me, I get what your saying, and I get what others are saying. Sometimes though, you can't get your way.

This reads like someone that doesn't live anywhere near California, let alone Los Angeles. Long Beach is is the Hip Hop capital of the world? fuck sake

It's his job to make sure they like the music, and if he can pull that off and enjoy himself in the process I don't see anything wrong.

I don't see anything wrong with that either. Just don't ask me to pay money to see someone who plays music I don't like.

It's as simple as that.

Maybe where you live. I'm doing ok over here playing exactly what I want whenever I want, because I play time appropriate music relative to whatever situation I'm in without compromise. If you don't want to play music you don't like, then don't play parties where that is expected of you. Simple as that.

Also, a lot of superstar DJs seem to be playing what is expected of them, not what they want, which is a big mistake.

You're not catered to...it's the weekend clubbers that keep that club opened. The ones that go out just to go out, and not to hear the latest cutting edge music. If they don't hear the same garbage they hear on the radio, they won't buy alcohol. I hate where the scene is right now. Sure u can throw your own parties and that's what u have to do to play the Hipster shit, though you're playing to an empty club most of the time.

Not entirely. If you have Damian Lazarus play at a club that normally books David Guetta, people likely will be a little uncomfortable. But if you put people who know fuck all about dance music in a night club and let someone like Lazarus or Jamie Jones do their thing, they will buy alcohol and they will dance. The key here is that most people just don't care and don't know the difference. You can play good music to people and they will dance even if they usually like Guetta or Steve Angello.

BTW who said I go out to hear the latest cutting edge music? lol I got lots of old records in my rotation right now, and tracks from last year, the only thing that matters is that they sound good.

Oh fucking please, you are still playing what is popular, it's just popular with a different group. I'm not trying to be an ass Woscar, I like you, but I think you're being incredibly hypercritical over something that doesn't really warrant it at all.

I also agree with this post. People can play all the jobber music they like, it doesn't bother me and it actually helps me. Without Guetta & Armin packing clubs there would be less money for the people on the fringe like me.

Moron, I do live here, and I know the area very well. Why don't you pick up a passport and come out here and see for yourself. There are way more Hip Hop clubs then Dance clubs. I've seen DJ's literally get picked up out of the booth and thrown out of the club by bouncers because they played something they shouldn't have.

Once again I will state. If someone asks me to spin 3 hours of Tiesto music only, I will do that, no questions asked. His music kicks ass and whenever I play his stuff, or the other stuff you don't like, the dance floor is packed and the bar is making money. And I have a gig to comeback too, because I gave them what they want. You have to get out of that dream dj booth called the bedroom sometime my friend.
