Its only art if the owner of the property agrees to it being there. Its vandalism otherwise. If some "artist" came and drew a big cock on the front of your house I'm sure you would just say its art and would think nothing of it.

some graffiti works are amazing. But if its on someones property who didnt ask for it, its a crime.

How would you like to spend a million dollars on a property only to have someone come along and deface it? Or $30 grand on a van or truck and have the same?

Funny thing is that im betting that there are many businesses that would love to have a talented artist paint their wall if they were only asked first. They may even pay them! One thing that needs to change to accomnodate this are the signage bylaws that stop that.

So you don't see a distinction between art and graffitti? I do...regardless if it's 'warranted' by the store owner. If the public near the building owner's shop or area loves it what's the owners' problem?? You'll say the problem is illegal but it's only so because the owner has a problem with it. My thing is WHY do they? It's art...it's not some gangland BS.

The manager or owner of finn mccool's where banksy's only remaining TO art is still standing was going to paint over it if it weren't for a photographer who told him the value of it.

If you go there now and see it there should be a plastic cover screwed into place protecting it...

See this:

So you have one person who does artful graffiti and others see it and decide to do their own graffiti there. My problem would be that the person did not have permission to do it. If the person came to me and simply asked if they could I would ask to see some of their other work and if I liked it I would say sure....hell I would probably even pay them for their time.

The cost to properly remove spray paint from a building isn't cheap. I had an insurance claim for someone who had graffiti removed from the brick on their house. The total cost was over $3,000.00.

The difference is very easy to distinguish:

Art: A piece of work that was commissioned by a property owner regardless of whether or not some people may consider it to be "graffiti."

Graffiti: Any unwanted alteration of property by means of paint, marker, sticker, or any other permanent impression regardless of whether or not some people consider it to be "art".

So protect the artful graffiti and screw the rest. If I owned the building and it was a mural whether or not I approved I'd keep it.

Jay: Art for me doesn't have to be commissioned if it's good graffiti. People that don't get this don't see the merit imo.

so then who defines what is art and what isnt? The property owner? The city? The guy next door? I say its the property owner. So then why cant the property owner decide upfront whether or not they want this art?

whats good and what isnt? Isnt art supposed to be subjective to its audience? So who gets to decide what is good and what isnt?

Why cant the owner of the property decide this beforehand?

The point of graffiti (unlawfully defacing property) essentially is leaving a mark. Not much difference than which dog can leave the bigger piss on the fire hydrant to be honest.
