But then again, majority of the population doesn't really give a shit. They're more concerned getting their brand new revolutionary iPhones, watching American/Canadian Idol, etc. Man I love living in a free society!

I interpreted him as meaning that it's silly to consider such things as the pinnacle of your existence, especially without even considering the global realities that allow you to obtain them so cheaply and easily. I understand that, but it's a dismissive attitude which places his awareness above the society's. It also counts the failures without looking at the successes achieved by the society - and transmitted on a network, no less, which also allows for the use of such devices. To be clear, I believe there are better and more humane ways for our society(ies) to exist, but the same slogans, advanced now for nearly half a century, I heard living in a co-op at the University of Texas, years ago - disparaging remarks which casts out all but the most stoic of thinkers - are not part of that solution.
