Bassel only means 'annoying' in the Moroccan dialect, it does mean 'courageous' or 'brave' in classical Arabic. And it's also pronounced "Ba-ssil" or "Ba-ssel" in clasical Arabic.. but the pronunciation differs from country to country, like Montana said.

But your last name still means 'weird/strange' in any Arabic dialect.

I really love that our names have meaning.

Does this suggest that Moroccans are annoyed by bravery? Selma, can you confirm?

You do realize that names in nearly every language have meaning, right?

Lol I don't think so.. I really don't know where it came from. The Moroccan dialect is very mixed. We got derivations from French, Spanish, Portuguese etc.. this is why people from other Arabic countries have a very hard time understanding us, but we can understand them perfectly, because their dialects are close to the classical Arabic, which everybody learns in school.

Affirmative. But almost every Arabic name has a meaning, it's not always the case in English or French for example.

Actually, it almost always is

There are very few "meaningless" names nowadays, such as Laquatikunakisha.... I'm even reluctant to say Nevaeh doesn't have a meaning

That's because many (most perhaps) common English names are not English in origin... same is true of most modern European names. For example the name Jennifer is rooted in Gaelic (Cornish specifically) and means fair. Mark is another good example, an anglacised variant of the Latin name Marcus; meaning dedicated.

I'll take your word for it .. some names may sound stupid or don't really mean much, but still have a meaning nonetheless.

I stand corrected.
