wow, you actually talked to bill gates?

that's amazing, i thought he was sorta like god, you just knew of him, he's up there making sure everything goes aiight, but nobody gets to ever talk to him.

i think microsoft is going down soon personally. .net is interesting, and i am going to start developing in it soon, but, all this antipiracy shit is pissing people off.

they are going to start moving to lindows soon i think.

but hey, i could be wrong!

This is just some random thoughts about this thread... I'm not sure if anyone has commented on it as I have only skimmed through it and didn't really take a good long hard look at everyone's post... so I apologize in advance if any of this is redundant...

First the whole piracy thing... part of the reason why software gets hacked is because it's damn near impossible to write perfect code... especially for an OS... there is going to be some way of circumvention somewhere it's inevitable... but I agree Microsoft doesn't seem to care that much... and the reasons are probably many... but honestly these are a few of what "I" believe they are...

1) Microsoft doesn't have time/resources to go after each individual home user to regain lost capital on systems... so they focus their efforts elsewhere.. getting OEM contracts and having their OS cost built into systems... then they also market the higher end stuff (servers, etc) because a) they have a higher price point and b) they are purchased by large companies who have deeper pockets than home users so when they need to go after someone it becomes worth their time and money... They also need to ensure that their smaller stuff Home windows things in place to push their larger software contracts... people use windows at home they are more likely to use the server apps at work... because they interact with each other...

2) they allow their versions to be hacked so they can approach the government for new legislation to put more "security" into their products... (I'm reffering to Pallidum)... at first it sounds like a good idea for most people but the bottom line is Microsoft then owns all the information that you provide the .NET architecture... basically in todays markets the most valuable resource is information especially if it is highly accurate and spans a large sample group... Microsoft stands to make more money off selling user info to others than really relying on any sort of Windows distribution... so they let is get hacked and then get support from the government to add measures to authenticate users (read: identify people and their demographics...)... in my mind it's pretty clever... and kudos for them.. they are smart...

3) finally you have to take into account that software piracy and music piracy is not "stealing" in the traditional sense of the word... if I make a copy of someone's Windows XP disc then the original still exists somewhere... Microsoft loses nothing from their bank account other than "percieved" loss... I'm not breaking into their offices and stealing petty cash... so technically they haven't lost anything... so really they don't need to go after me... now I'm in no way saying that this makes piracy right... but it does suggest that a different set of business procedures need to be in place as this isn't a traditional "theft" problem...

Secondly... .NET from what I understand of it so far has some really cool ideas behind it... (I'm not a programmer, just a hardware geek who loves reading technical stuff... horrah for /.)... is that it allows you to create a program engine and then have it interface with many different languages... so I'd write the code for a filesharing program engine... and then people could add features in whatever language they wanted and it would all work together because it was built in this .net structure... PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong as I don't want to continue to spread this ignorance around if I am...

Third... the whole service pack thing for Windows XP is still a rumour... and chances are once it comes out a hack will be available... I have yet to see a confirmed report of the service pack disabling a Windows XP installation... and we probably won't see this until it actually gets released... so why worry... your hacked version of windows works now doesn't it??? so cross that bridge when you come to it...

Finally... as for the transfer to linux... can I recommend Lycoris... I have it on my laptop and like it a lot... for a desktop OS it is remarkable well built... it doesn't have all the choices and options of a normal linux distro... but that's a good thing as it's simplifies installation and it gives you a chance to jump into the linux foray... I personally suggest that most people try linux at least once... I still use both Linux and Windows... but have found that each provide something I need... I feel that some time in the future you may need both... so it may help to have a grasp of at least some *nix knowledge...

http://www.lycoris.com/

WHEW... that's a long one...

Well said mate.
Yeah, Lindows seems like a nice os but..microsoft always keeps getting around this "small" problems.
As for linux,i've heard a lot about it and seen a little of it but i think i'll stick with my windowsXP for now.less trouble!
Do not forget,Microsoft owns the piaza and keeps making better and better os'es,which means millions of people will not even think of another os proggy! Ever heard of the "mass populace" phenomenon? That's the primary weapon in Microsoft's hands.
Oh, by the way,on your pic sothis, apart from you id card what is it that proves u went to the big guy's house? I mean,i believe you but..?

microsoft and bill gates doesn't give a rats flying f*ck about you who is using this cracked version of xp that over a million other people have (because its the same product code)....i mean seriously what will they do? throw you in jail for ONE copy, nope. they just don't care, its not worth it to them, even if you do buy that ONE license

what they do care about is those big ass companies that require a different license for every machine the product is installed on....because even if you actually buy Windows XP and Office XP and whatever else crap for your company and you install it on more than one machine, its illegal. granted microsoft isn't going to care about 2 or 3 comps, but when its like 50,000....those are a lot of licenses the company would have to buy, hence microsoft will give a damn

so once again, why the HELL would they care about YOU and your cracked windows xp that a lot of other people have

Exactly. In theory Microsoft would make billions if their software was uncrackable and every user had no option than to pay. In practice it wouldn't work, because we all know that we're not prepared to pay for it. We'd just find other software to use and Microsoft would lose their monopoly. They're better off this way.

exactly if the majority of people have the OS then the server's etc.. have to cater to that... and who know the OS better than MS... so really the home users become loss leaders in order for MS to get a bigger chunk of the pie... Microsoft isn't so much a great software company but more of a great Business strategy company...

And they're still ironing out the bugs in OS X too. But for Graphic Design and perhaps some audio production they're a reasonable platform (and they're perfect for the person who "wants to check their mail and get on the internet" as they're pretty much idiot-proof lol). The main reason Apple never really got further then they have in the market is pretty simple. They waited too long to start bring out games on em.

concerning macs well here's how you compare wintel/mac cpus:
mac motherboards have quicker processing compared to wintel , why is that?
less processing steps , mac : 7 , wintel : 21. Wintel loses "all" it's numerical ( superior processing power 2 GHz for example ) power cause of these steps.
Tests have been done over and over, and for complex graphic tasks ( applying filters in photoshop for example and rendering with maya ) the macs perform faster.
So bar none, macs are somewhat "quicker"
( I have a 266 G3 beige at home and it runs faster than my 766 celeron ( or is the celeron the low point ;p ) and to worsten the issue it's a laptop! )
Oh and concerning ironing out bugs on mac Os X .. humm no need to bite on mac Windows has been doing that all the time for every upgrades they came out with, which always meant more bugs ;p

Mac is the real leader in graphic design, and sound, look at the pros, that is what they are using. And if it weren't for an opening and growing need for apps on all platforms, all the good stuff would still only be running on mac.
Concerning games, there used to be a time where the mac releases graphical quality were preferred by the game editors. And actually games still run great and look wonderful on macs, it's just that not all of them get released on mac that's true.

I don't think you can compare all the points between windows and mac. They're a whole different ball park.

I got my mac back in september, and I'll soon get another one, I'm aiming at a dual 1 ghz, with a 22" Apple studio screen, oups I don't have the money but at least I can still dream. Anyhow I am getting another "real" pc soon for running a server and doing more power work then my shitty compaq laptop.

I myself will never be 100% windows free , I don't see that coming any time soon.

Indeed, Macs are slick and nice to the eye, exceptional at music production (the new ones especially) but, truth be said, they lose in MANY other categories. But who knows...maybe in time..

wow this thread is really long so i haven't read it and apalogize in advance for my ignorance if i repeat anything already said.. anyhow i'm not a super computer buff, all i know is that i have a compaq and it sucks shit and i hate compaq, i wish i could build my own computer so i wouldn't put up w/ this bullshit, or at least i should have gotten a dell.. anyways, my friend is a computer tech for some company that has access to software before its released and he has some special windows XP that supposedly has all these fixes and shit for its crappiness and infinite errors.. i think it might be called windows XP service pack or service pack 2 or something.. i don't remember but he's gonna give it to me and he said hopefully after reformating my computer, it will run better w/o all the compaq bullshit on there (hardware is hardware, and hopefully the system bios isn't really fucked by compaq).. and i guess supposedly this XP system pack or whatever isn't available in the store yet, or it might have just been released this week, i dunno but i remember he said its not out yet and he told me this over the weekend. but if he can have copies and give them to me, and he's just a computer tech college student that could care less about microsoft and its anti-distribution prosecuting ideas, i'm sure that people like my friend are a dime a dozen and microsoft knows that.. do you really think they make their money off of the general public? hell no!! they make their money off of every dell and HP and gateway computer ordered because believe it or not, when you buy a computer that comes w/ that software, u are also paying for the license to that copy of windows that is powering ur machine.. and forexample, i used to work at a Wells Fargo corporate office building that had about 2000 computers, each w/ windows and office and watever microsoft programs are necessary to the corporate world, and yes, each individual computer is a running a program that is licensed, so alone my building has over 2000 licenses for Windows, and each other software, and my building is probalby one of at least 500 corporate office buldings for my company alone.. so yup, their money comes from the corporate world, the public buying Windows is chump change in comparison.
