Just hoping I can keep the bass at a normal level if I get 5 or 6 inch monitors.

I had high-end computer speakers before... and bookshelf speakers + amp would probably cost about the same as low end (price wise) monitors, and is just more clutter.

I will probably just get a pair of KRK RP6 G2's at Moog... they are only 227 a piece.

Yeah you probably will find that 5-6" cones will be less bassy, but the bass they do have will be less clear - although for mixing it's probably not so important.

I'm about to switch the other way: 5" drivers up to 9"... bigger drivers can handle the bass with less effort so are more accurate and clearer in the bottom end. My "studio" is fairly small too so without care I could end up with the same bass issues, but the speakers I've chosen (Mackie HR824s) have got space control switches on the back to rein the bass in a bit, hopefully without losing clarity. Quite a lot of speakers have got similar controls - including the M-Audio Studiophile BX5s I'm upgrading from, or sticking an EQ between your mixer and your speakers could do the same job.

OP here. I did end up buying the JBL2325's and really like them! Much more suitable for my apartment than my old Mack MR8s
