the old karma-thing.

target your audience: if illegal downloads don't convert into legal ones because you didn't manage to make people want to OWN your record, then there's something wrong with the way you put your music out, the way you behave, the music itself, which means in short, a problem with your personality and your ego.

now, you can't force people to buy your music if they don't want to. In this case, those people don't belong to your target audience. Ignore them, move on to something more positive that makes everyone happy.

The last year I bought for at least 600$ in digital downloads. All those tracks had those three things in common. They were marketed in a clever way, well-targeted, and they were incredibly good in their own style.

The same last year I got a zillion tracks through promo pools. How many do I play on my car stereo?

Conclusion: if you want to sell music, first of all, focus on how much heart you put into it and target your audience, and soon or late, it will become successful on its own without having to force it too much. Everything else makes you either ridiculous or not-credible for your target audience.

Out of curiosity, Lolo, how worried are you personally about the effects of piracy on stuff you're involved in?

Unless Funkagenda is like deadmau5, doesn't he play other producers' music at his gigs to get famous, just like every other DJ?

I used to be extremely worried, until recently when I realized what shape music is into because of that worry/fear. Yes I subscribe to a service that has all sharing links removed in less time, but besides that, I can't be mad at people for spreading culture. You'll always have those who don't want to pay, those who can't afford it, then those who effectively buy your music, whatever it is. They're called your fans. And this is only for those people that you have to deliver, outside yourself of course.

ie

the Arena = Andy Ling - fixation.

Excuse me sir but you are a fucking idiot. Let's take a step back and examine the reason WHY things are the way they are with these sites before you spout out more BS.

Sites like zippyshare are for hosting files for download. THATS IT. They do not monitor what gets posted on their website and they don't allow people to search their site because they would be shut down extremely quickly. Why? the same reason why your ISP (internet service provider) cannot be sued if you download something illegally using their network.

They provide the 'pipe' so to speak and it's your fault if you push shit through it. If this ISP status didn't exist then we basically wouldn't have internet because your internet provider would be sued out of oblivion. The same goes for download sites like rapidshare, megaupload, zippyshare, etc. They provide a service and it is the user's fault if it is abused, not the website itself. They also do not allow people to search their database and enforce download limites because they are not for publically sharing files. THEY ARE NOT FOR MASS DOWNLOAD.

However, it IS the website's responsibility to remove an illegally shared file if it is brought to their attention. Big filesharing sites get hundereds of DMCA takedown requests a month and it is their responsibility to remove the file immedietaly. Luckily these sites are use to getting these kind of requests and can efficiently comply.

Artists SHOULD get compensation for their hard work even if it's shitty like funkagenda. But don't blame the service for being abused. It is just disgusting that you would want to destroy these companies because some idiot decides to abuse their service. Would you blame a pharmaceutical company if someone decides to take too many and OD's? Would you blame the postal service if someone decided to hide drugs in their packages? Hell no.

I apologize if my wording is a bit funky but I had to write this quickly.

bullshit reply. "This companies". I'm sure those zippyshare guys know that 99% of their zippy-income comes because of all their illegal file hosting.
Sure, they will remove the few links that get reported. But those tracks will be uploaded another 5 times one hour after its taken down anyway.

Of course these sites should be pulled down. There's a reason why there are so many file-sharing sites. You really think the mass wants to share so many legal own files? Get real...

You're rediculous mate. I use those sites all the time to send people mixes i made or tracks i'm working on. Sure theirs soundcloud but what if i don't want to put it on soundcloud? and some people don't even have soundclouds... The point is, people are always going to need to share files legal or not. Are you seriously supporting getting rid of ALL filesharing sites? If not, who get's to stay? And how do you keep illegal files off you're servers? It's impossible to verify if every file is legal.

Also, let's say I email someone an illegal track from my gmail account. Isn't google then a filesharing site that hosts illegal content?

I know it's frustrating but be realistic...

Have you ever seen some article of Zippyshare (or whichever site) where they asked not to upload illegal files anymore?

Or that they are frustrated about their site being "abused"?

No, they (the uploadsites) like it, because it makes them money. Yes, I fully support taking sites down that don't make any effort in stopping the abusement on their own system.

"What if I don't want to put it on soundcloud". Haha... that sounds like a 2 year old. "I don't want to "

About the gmail question: no its different because you are targeting the file to somebody. When its put on zippy, everybody gets to download it.

When CD burning came around the industry didn't suffer that much. Sure, friends burned CD's for each other (which is the same sending each other mp3's now, like with msn/gmail), but it wasn't like big-mass handing out free CD's to everybody(like zippyshare with mp3s).

As if Zippyshare (or other sites like it) is even a big part of the file sharing business. They're just a drop in the ocean, they just happen to be the most visible examples.
