This is actually the only big surprise. Every single typical "gateway to electronic music" band that reached wider audience, but still managed to stay more or less uncorrupted in the 90s is represented, yet only The Orb is missing. What gives, Mixmag readers?

Well, numerous reasons. The first is the absence of massive names like Aphex Twin, The Orb and Autechre, which needs explaining. The second is it's a different readership for a different magazine. The third is that none of us appear to have actually read the original article/web page or seen the submission sheet.

How else are you going to do a poll? Travel back in time?

It's not ballsy, it's absolutely standard. This is what every poll conducted by every magazine or TV company or anyone else does: conduct an ahistorical popularity poll and call it the Greatest Films/Books/Albums/Classic Cars/Footballers/Dance Acts Of All Time. And nobody gives a fuck because everyone knows what the poll is about and how it was determined. Again, seriously: do you live in the real world?

EDIT: Also, I cannot believe you're criticising Mixmag's selection process for such a list when you're getting pissed off about the omission of a live act you have never seen perform live.

I'd have to agree with this. Considering the source of this survey, I think it actually does a reasonable job of balancing the inclusions of both relatively new headliners, and the indelible dance acts of yesteryear that almost any established performer would cite as a long-standing influence; the 'who are these people?' and 'where are these people?' crowds should be equally satisfied (to the extent that a poll like this can satisfy them).

On that note, nice to see Depeche Mode deservedly mentioned.
