Yes. I think there was generally more original content on forums around that time because the web was less centralized, so it was less likely to see people all finding things on the same few sites (YouTube, 4Chan, Reddit, Facebook).
There was also simply less content to draw from on the web at the time. Pictures and vids were less rampant because there weren't many huge sites for sharing them, many forums lacked the ability to post video at all, and many people's bandwidth couldn't handle it.
Also, dare I say it, most people spent less time on their computers in those days, so they might have had more things to talk about that were not taken from the net.
