Nou, you're absolutely correct in that poor planning of Barbarossa was a material contributor of the eastern front turning when it did; however, playing the what if game just kind of clouds the issue. I mean you could argue that if they had remembered the rail lines were different sizes, had proper clothing, built an adequate supply line, ect. that they would have won... but they didn't. On the flip side one could just as credibly argue that even with all the proper planning the Soviets still would have one because the bulk of their best forces were not present for the initial stages of Barbarossa and would likely have been able to repell the Germans once they arrived on the front back from Manchuria. You could also argue that if Stalin had planned better the Germans wouldn't have even made it out of Poland. Speculation can be fun but not fruitful. The most important factors for the Soviets winning the second great war were entirely independent of the German failing, particularly; a vast supply of fighting aged men, iron clad desire to defeat the Germans, and a strong enough resolve to suffer incredible casualties and still keep fighting. |
My argument hinges though on the defeat of Great Britain, where a two front war for the Germans would become impossible due to the inability of the Allies to stage a major invasion from there. Remember that a lot of the North African campaign was run from the UK, and if the North Atlantic had been made useless due to no where to go, the mid-Atlantic would become fertile hunting grounds for German U-boats against convoys taking a much longer route to resupply an allied effort in Africa.
Im not arguing so much that Barbarossa was the failure, as much as I am arguing that Operation Sea Lion's failure to be pursued was the biggest failure. The UK's ability to remain a threat to Germany was the real down fall to the Nazi war machine. From there they launched a second front in France and continuously harassed German industry with bomber raids.
Speculation is fun though, its not fruitful, but it is fun. Also its not like we have to solve anything so speculating on past events is rather harmless.
