Now it's worth noting here that I'm not trying to bash the genre, as I said I enjoy a good party with it. I liked the track you posted too, and a lot of my friends have a fondness for the genre as well. Or at least the ones that grew up in the nineties, which is understandable since it fits in perfectly with the whole new age vibe that was floating around back then. |
Not that I'm that annoyed or anything but:
I fail to see how describing the overall moods a genre tends to have makes that a gimmick of the genre. If that's the case then house/disco is all gimmicky because lots of it attempts to be "funky". Most certainly the different moods displayed in psy is more varied then mainstream trance by far, and possibly even more so than techno.
As for what's psychedelic, well first off there's no real concise meaning of what psychedelic music is, apart from that it sounds good on acid, and psytrance is far far more tailored to sound good on acid than industrial is. From the many many tracks that have a darker mood but with occasional happy vibes (to create the feeling of the world is crazy/dark but beautiful) to the fact that the bassline is generally somewhat steady but other elements are changing it's highly like that.
If we're talking about a thought provoking sortof mood... well that's subjective. More importantly... it sounds a lot like the arguments I had when I was 15/16 (only 3-4 years ago for me) about people who said that electronic music had no emotion because when they listened to it it had no emotion, but metal did. Ofcourse the fact that for me at the time it was the other way around was to them irrelevent. Regardless... that sortof debate does my head in and if I have to have it in my life ever again I'm going to kill myself.
ALSO, in terms of "varied moods" and industrial... umm, have you been to any goth clubs lately? There is way way more variety in psy than there is in the average ebm/industrial track. If you're comparing underground industrial to generic full on psy... well that's not a fair comparison.
As for the full on baseline, having the same bassline for the entire night (but not the exact same, some tracks have heavier basses/varied kickdrums) can be a hypnotic/meditative experience. It's a little bit more complicated than simply producers being lazy. Also, people listen to psy to dance or for the moods. It's not the same as listening to house music that's "interesting". You can't get the exact same mood with a different bassline, so if someone wants to write a track or only tracks that go "dun uhh uhh uhh" "or DUH UHHH" then it just wouldn't be the same mood with a different bassline.
Although certainly, I'll pay the term gimmick for the full on bass, it makes a lot of sense to call it that at least.
As I've said to a few people before, just because I write a lot in an argument/discussion doesn't necassarily mean I'm mad or care a lot about the topic. However hopefully stuff I've written allows people to understand the mentality of the music more/is generally interesting to read.
