No, I asked why you would lash out at Burial "in specific" as a result of the Nico Jaar thing. But because I didn't use the words "Nico Jaar" in the wording of the question you seem to have completely forgotten your own self-proclaimed mission statement in your haste to score points, and thus made yourself look like an idiot. But please, continue to tell me how to debate. |

I'm just curious as to why you're venting it all against Burial and not any of the other widely-respected artists that TA collectively likes.
And stripping aside hyperbole and sarcasm, please get back to me on how Burial literally sounds like his music is from 30 years ago. |
Burial. Widely-respected artists that TA collectively likes. You said nothing of Nico Jaar, so why the fuck on earth would I think that your comment had anything to do with him at all. My point is, and always has been, that it's absurdly hypocritical for the lot of people in MD to criticize Nico Jaar (not even for his music) but to praise someone who adds fucking vinyl crackles into his tracks to sound more "legit" or "cool" or whatever the fuck you want to call it. DJ hipsters think that vinyl above all else should be the default medium for DJs to use. He makes his music sound like that on purpose not because "it works" but because he's pandering to that crowd, who quite clearly eat it up (as is seen fairly often on this site). But please, continue with your ad hominem bullshit arguments. Can you even make a clear and concise argument without attacking the intelligence of your opponent? I'd be hard pressed to find an argument you've made without "idiot" or "utter fucking cretin" in it. Do you think using fancy British insults wins you points among the stupid Americans who are blinded by your classic Brit wit?

I said nothing of Jaar insomuch as I didn't type the words "Nico Jaar" in my post, as I've already established. But I'm going to quote back to you my post in full and the post I was replying to, also in full.

The connection is that the same people who praise Burial on this site, blast Nico Jaar for no reason other than his sounding pretentious. I specifically remember his "baroque" comment regarding his upcoming EP/album. But no, when Burial makes his music sound shitty for the hipsterfags who think it's cool to have an mp3 of a song that sounds like it's being played on vinyl that's totally awesome. |

Yes, I've grasped that your months-long SARCASTIC TYPING campaign is a typical SRUSSELL reaction to someone slighting your point of view. I'm just curious as to why you're venting it all against Burial and not any of the other widely-respected artists that TA collectively likes.
And stripping aside hyperbole and sarcasm, please get back to me on how Burial literally sounds like his music is from 30 years ago. |
It's not like we'd been talking abut Nico Jaar and how he relates to Burial for the previous THREE RESPONSES either, is it? You know perfectly well that I was referring to the Jaar thread when I was talking about someone slighting your opinion, and you've now realised what the words "it all" refer to in the sentence "I'm just curious as to why you're venting it all at Burial." Somewhere in the back of your mind you've realised that you were far too quick to dice my post up and try and get one over on me, and you've gone and made yourself look mighty fucking stupid. Of course, you're SRUSSELL, a man who will make a hundred consecutive posts telling everyone how he doesn't care, so the odds of you admitting to this calamitous error in this thread are slim-to-nil, and instead we've got to put up with a few pages of tedious face-saving manoeuvres from you. But make no mistake, everyone in this thread apart from you is fully aware of your stupidity at this juncture.
Anyway, moving away from YOU CAN'T DEBATE and back towards the point...

I know exactly what your point is, I even spelled it out for you a few posts back. It was just fun watching you trip over the J00F thing. Now draw up your chair and listen closely, because I'm going to impart a rare jewel into this debate; some music knowledge. Something I have in abundance and something you are terribly lacking.
Burial doesn't put the crackles in to imitate vinyl. Much of the crackle he samples is from field recordings of fire, rainfall, air movements and so on. The aim of the crackle is to imitate pirate radio broadcasts. Now you've never listened to any London-based pirate transmissions, so you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. I have. In fact, that's how I first heard dubstep, back in 2005. And yes, I'M SO UNDERGROUND, etc. Pirate radio was the prime agent in the dissemination of bass music in London youth culture from the late '80s onwards. It's what Burial grew up listening to. Hipsters don't listen to pirate radio. Hipsters wouldn't dare set foot in the buildings most of those transmissions come from. Pirate radio comes amateur equipment broadcasting out of council block balconies, the sound quality is crackly, and broken and full of static. Sound familiar? All of Burial's music is essentially one gigantic love letter to pirate radio*. His music aims to evoke the raw urban vibes of late night car drives through the London boroughs. It's got nothing to do with hipsters wanting to pretend they're listening to vinyl. People like those crackles because they sound massively fucking atmospheric. Burial is the complete opposite of Nico Jaar, because while Jaar laughably tries to evoke high-brow reference points ("14th Century baroque church music" or whatever anachronistic bullshit he spouted) to add gravitas to his work, Burial elevates something extremely raw and lowbrow into the level of beauty. Which is why it isn't hypocrisy at all.
I need to go to sleep, my alarm goes off in 7 hours. But pay close attention. That was music discussion. And you just lost.
*Which incidentally, Woony, is why you're totally wrong to compare him with Basic Channel. But that's another discussion.
