The cosmetic effect is permanent, although both skin and ink slowly but surely degrade. I find it myopic because tastes, aesthetics, values change over the course of your life - if you don't think they will you're effectively admitting you're someone who will experience no notable personal growth for the rest of your life.

What does procuring something as superficial as a tattoo have to do with the future possibility of personal growth? That line of reasoning is spurious, at best. Last I checked, that sort of development takes place on the inside, with an important aspect being that of becoming more present-minded - which means realising the futility of harbouring regrets about past decisions.

I've grown immensely as a person, having gone from a depressed, near-alcoholic, 3/4 pack a day smoker working low-wage jobs, to being a relatively happy and contented shiatsu therapist and yoga teacher who helps others with their health and well-being and earns a decent living doing so. I've had the same tattoos for a span of 15-25 years, none of them are particularly polished (someone on TA made fun of my back piece, until I explained the personal significance behind it), and I have zero regret about having obtained any of them.

Anecdotal evidence, I know, but it pokes a decent sized hole in your argument.

This whole thread boils down to "what I think looks good on other people", which, while natural to an extent, also makes a lot of y'all look like some shallow-assed motherfuckers. Anyone who would turn away a caring, smart, creative, fit and relatively balanced individual (female or male) because of some ink embedded in their skin deserves the lonely life they're setting up for themselves.

I should add that my wife has two oval pieces on her lower back, inked over a decade ago by Daemon Rowanchilde, and she kicks ass. Literally - she's now been training for 7 years in shotokan karate and is grading for 2nd dan next year. Unless you're attending a McDojo, you don't get to that point without some significant growth as an individual.

So there.

I think 90% 68% (FINE) of tattoos are idiotic. I once knew a guy who got Porky Pig tattooed on his thigh because his friends urged him to. Fucking moron.

Even the modicum of respect I have for people who go for full sleeve/arm/back/whatever is so often shattered because you'll find a mix of cartoon characters and Iron Maiden cover art with naked depictions of long-dead pin-ups set amid 3 wolf moon and memorials for fallen comrades among, blehhhh. It looks like someone doodled a bunch of stupid crap from your middle school notebook, jammed it into a blender, and blew it all up your ass until your skin turned into this Garbage Pail Kids patina meant to baffle potential adversaries until you can make a getaway.

I realize tattoos can be a personal memento, and that is cool, but when you display it all with pride, you can't really expect it to mean anything to anyone else anywhere near what it means to you, and that results in kind of an apparent disconnect with a lot of people -even apart from the religious angle- as it can be construed as egotistical, solipsistic, disrespectful, brash, self-harming, etc.

Anyway, it's kind of like street art in a lot of ways, chacun à son goût.

Both your taste and how you present yourself are irrevocably tied into your personality and how you wish to be perceived. What you find aesthetically appealing at one point in your life can change drastically as you change as a person, so getting a tattoo for cosmetic reasons is a statement of complete confidence that your tastes will never change. To me that’s either short-sighted or stagnant. As for your tattoo, it sounds like you had it done to denote something of personal significance so it doesn’t really have anything to do with this point anyway. You might think the best way to denote something of personal significance is to scratch it permanently onto your skin. Personally I find that crass.

Well I’m very happily in a relationship, thanks, so I won’t be worrying too much about that, and it sounds like I’m a lot more balanced than you were at my age. Not that it will stop you incessantly criticising the personality of someone over 20 years younger than you in between bleating on and on about your own spiritual growth.

Right? If only I'd known that I could secure a lifetime of passive disdain from some people for a paltry sum and a few hours in a chair, I'd have done it years from now.
