55% of them said it last year.

To be honest, I was never thrilled about linguistics. I did a language/literature split degree and opted for the literature option where possible (such as my dissertation). The language modules I did study were probably the most "literary" ones I could. I was interested in linguistics primarily as a way of analysing literature in a more nuts and bolts way than merely airy-fairy lit crit.

Of course, all that ever comes up on TA is discussion about dialect, phonetics and so on, so my knowledge is dredged begrudgingly from memories of the lectures I had the least interest in.

True, lol.

What was the percentage turn-up at the polls? You don't have compulsory voting like we do here, right?

It was 85%, which is extremely high by UK standards. Normal turn-out is pretty low in this country, a combination of apathy and the flaws in our voting system making voting pointless for people in many constituencies.

Yeah, they definitely sound the same to me.

Say "Was it a real reel?" and "Was the reel real?"

According to the American version of the Cambridge dictionary, "real" begins with "ih" while "reel" begins with "e", but it doesn't say where in the US people speak this way. This had better be a typo or something.

To be honest, I've just found out "hurry" and "furry" don't rhyme and I'm trying to accept the fact, but I can't. Nothing makes sense to me any more. Words are now meaningless. Bork.

Haha, "rihl?" Maybe if you're from Louisiana.

Lol. I say "hurry" as /ˈhɝ.ɹi/, the third pronunciation on this page:

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/hurry

Apparently this is called the "hurry-furry merger": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engli....93furry_merger
