Hey, DJ Naeblis - did you know that "Naeblis" in russian roughly means "We fucked a lot" or "We were fucking around" or "It was very difficult", as in "We were fixing tranceaddict servers again and oh man, we "naeblis". Just thought it would be funny )) (No offense meant)...

C ya.

right after ag blocked all the music, mediaseek and filetopia were thrown around as alternatives....in short, mediaseek is a bad alternative, it lacks features, and is regularly offline. it can't handle the network load. Most people in the large ag groups have tried and dismissed it (yes, i owned one of them...a trance group, about 2000 memberes ..man i miss ag )....you won't get it to catch on.....it also has adware by the way.

there needs to be a serious effort by programmers who have used ag themselves to draw back ag's users.....the whole web based system was a winner. They will need to implement genere searches, and groups/profiles, message boards etc for it to become popular.

just use SOULSEEK or the DC hub until a real alternative comes around

there, thats my say

Question, why would someone spend countless hours to do something like this for FREE??? I mean in the hayday, all these services were betting on a miracle that someday, it would be legal for people to trade files and they would start charging monthly fee - so, whoever builds the biggest user base would be the winner. That is why so much money was spent on bandwidth, server capacity, fault tolerance, redundancy, etc... - banking on a dream. With RIAA winning case after case after case (with the money you and I paid for those CDs) there's no incentive for new commers to get involved. Think about it - RIAA's pockets are soooo deep that Ukraine has been denied NATO application because of severe piracy issues there!!!!! No joke!!!! A NATO MEMBERSHIP DENIED BECAUSE OF COPYRIGHT VIOLATIONS!!!!

And you think someone will bet crazy loot on getting another Napster/AG-like service after all that happened??? I don't think so... Of course, I am a pessimist though. So, trade while you can because just like everything else that was good about the internet at one point or another is becomming nul, void, obliterated, illegal, and bound to get you in trouble.

BTW, I live in US and it pisses me off that most of the internet policy is dictated by the US - the most litiguous nation in the world.

I'll get off my soap box now.

well, they don't do it for free, ag had that gold system with dedicated servers etc. there is also advertizing revenue, and offering priority downloads with a paypal system also works (soulseek). there are still new p2p's coming around. Not all are in it for the money believe it or not, the ampount of p2p progs is growing!!!, it isn't decreasing just because the riaa is going on a pointless rampage.

a lot of p2p's are quite secure now....eg filetopia....things like p2p specific firewalls are around...people can also mask their ip's...the RIAA can't win....

In short the RIAA needs to FOAD... then maybe we wont have all these hate mongers on the pop charts like Eminem.

The only way P2P can survive is by remaining completely de-centralized. However, I bet you money that pretty soon, RIAA will start going after companies or individuals that develop p2p software, but before that, they will start prosecuting ISPs that allow p2p protocols. There is an article on wired about Kazaa's impending doom, here's a link: http://www.wired.com/news/digiwood/0,1412,56584,00.html

Read it, think about the implications and understand that RIAA is one of the biggest lobbying parties in U.S. their pockets are wide, deep, and they will not stop.

however, playing a devil's advocate here (no pun intended) - imagine you're the musician who independently produced, engineered, and marketed your CD online. Month one - your sales are good, you're selling several hundered CD's a month, since you don't have to pay royalties, your expences are minor. Month 2, your sales drop by 40%, month 3 - you're down to 10CD's a month... You go to Kazaa and see that your album is on every machine, you go to Soulseek, and every person has a full rip of your CD, you go to any other file trading place and realize that your album is everywhere. You spent one year of your time to produce a quality album, spent countless hours on mastering, producing, mixing, testing, burning, etc. and your total profit for a year's worth of work was $6,000...

Sad, but true. Honor system does not work... sorry... If you are making good money on day job and got cash to spare, you'll buy the CD, but most of your fans may not have the means to pay for your CD, but they'll take it for free... if they can. I mean, how many times did you download an album online and after you listened and liked it, went out and paid for it???? Nah...

so RIAA, while being "evil" - is looking out for its own and artists' interest as well...

I'm back off the soap box... Thanks for list... err, reading...

greed must die.
