I don't know how some of you started listening to trance in 1993, because I'm pretty sure it didn't exist back then. But if we're talking about electronic music in general, then it was 1993 for me, with 2 Unlimited and that kind of stuff. The first time I heard about trance was in 1996 or 1997, and I liked it but I couldn't find much quality material, so I listened stuff like Dune or Sash. Then in 1998 I think, I really got into it, when I found www.jaydee.cz (doesn't exist anymore, unfortunately), it was a great czech site with lots of quality tracks, but then it got closed in 2000. Then I searched the web for a while for other sites and stumbled on to here.

I think I covered this in another thread with a similar topic (I didn't know there was a special spot for polls...)

Here is the text below from that thread:

Believe it or not, there was actually a time when people PURCHASED THEIR MUSIC AT RECORD STORES!!! It may be hard for some of the younger ones on TA to believe, but it actually cost money to acquire music once upon a time...

I would imagine that would be true, since over here in the US, the compilations I was buying often referred to the rave/hardcore/breakbeat sound as "London Hardcore". In the US, there were DJ's like Bad Boy Bill that had dance shows on B96, and he would often mix in techno with house music. That's where I first heard Inner City's "Good Life" and "Big Fun" in 1990. I'm sure other DJ's around the US were doing similar things.

There was something called "DMX", as streaming radio service over cable that was available in the US. There were a number of cool tunes on the dance channel, and that's where I first heard "Journeys By DJ Volume 4: Silky Mix with John Digweed" in 1994. Also later that year I bought my first and LAST Oakie CD, JDJ Volume 5...

There was no such thing as trance pre-95, there were one or 2 tracks (gat decor passion, some v.v.v.early Graham Gold and Quattara stuff, oakie stuff/remixes). it kinda came out of ibiza in the early 90s, but unless you actually went to ibiza and heard this stuff, I'd say it's unlikely you would have been listening to it.

LOL! I'm, sorry man, but that's gotta be one of the funniest things I've heard in a while...

If you'd like to stop by and see my collection of CD's and vinyl to see that trance DID exist pre 1995, you're more than welcome. While what was happening back then may not be considered as trance to those who have no knowledge of it, it's where trance started. Ibiza did have something to do with trance back then, but it was in Germany where it became huge around 1992/1993 (Ibiza had something more to do with Goa/Psy trance, than the German hard trance movement.)

Some examples of some essential listening for that time period (along with a note to where I first heard it and/or the release date):

Age Of Love - Age Of Love (on "Trance" by Rumour Records in 1992)
Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (first heard on a mixtape I have from 1994, released on Eye Q Recordsin 1993)
Leftfield - Song Of Life ("Futurhythms" CD 1992)
Hardfloor - Hardtrance Acperience EP (Harthouse/Eye Q1992)
Hardfloor - Trancescript EP (Harthouse/Eye Q 1993)
Resistance D - Human Ep (Harthouse/Eye Q 1993)
Hardfloor - TB Resuscitation LP (Harthouse/Planet Earth 1993)
4 Voice - Eternal Spirit [Northern Mix] ("TranceMaster Volume 4" CD 1993)
Union Jack - Two Full Moons And A Trout (Platipus 1993)
Paragon - Multiline ("The Universe - Tribal Gathering '94" CD on Frankfurt Beat 1994)
Mario De Bellis - Yes (Also on "The Universe - Tribal Gathering '94")
Quench - Dreams ("Trance FIVE" on Rumour Records 1994)
Deep Piece - Torwart (also on "Trance FIVE")
Reel X - Feels Good ("Influence 1.1" CD on Cleopatra 1994)
Reel X - Orca (also on "Influence 1.1")
Humate - East (Superstition 1994)
Rising High Collective - Fever Called Love [Hardfloor Mix] ("Secret Life Of Trance" CD in 1993)
Orbital - Diversions EP (1994 on FFRR)
Marmion - Schoeneberg (Superstition 1994)
Spicelab - Spirit Of Fear EP (Harthouse/Planet Earth 1994)
Renegade Legion - The Weeping Waste ("Trancesylvania 2" CD on 23 Frankfurt 1993)
Exit EEE - Epedemic (also on "TranceSylvania 2")
Art Of Trance - Gloria [Transparent Mix] (also on "TranceSylvania 2")
Legend B - End Of A Season [X-Static Female Mix] (also on "TranceSylvania 2")
CJ Bolland - Camargue [Galaxy Remix] (also on "TranceSylvania 2")
3 Of A Living - Rhythm Of Life (also on "TranceSylvania 2")
Illuminatus - Love Technique (also on "TranceSylvania 2")
The Spritualist - Flight Over Jerusalem (also on "TranceSylvania 2")
Titanic - Ice Breaker (also on "TranceSylvania 2")
The Rising Sons - Afghan Acid (also on "TranceSylvania 2" - in other words, GET THIS CD! LOL)
Norman - Drifing Away ("Trance Europe 2.0" CD on 1994)
Brainchild - Synfonica (Eye Q 1993)
Jam & Spoon - Stella ("Logic Trance 2" on Logic 1994)
Underworld - Rez (also on "Logic Trance 2")
CJ Bolland - Springyard (R&S Records 1993)
System 7 - Desir ("Trance Europe Express" CD on Volume Records in 1993)
Cosmic Baby - Space Track (also on "Trance Europe Express")
Paul Van Dyk - Today ("Trance Europe Express 2" CD in 1994)
Human Beings - Orbit (also on "Trance Europe Express 2")
Ambush - The Sun (also on "Trance Europe Express 2")
Country & Western - Reincarnated (Zebra Records 1993)
Baby Doc - The Seduction of the Matahari ("Pure" CD on Smile Commincations 1995)
Union Jack - Red Herring (Platipus 1995)
Baby Doc - Siena ("Trance Fiction: Fever Pitch At Dawn" CD on Rising High 1995)

This ought to be a pretty good START to finding what sorta trance was out there pre-1995.

Otherwise your club scene would have exploded in the same manner, and way before ours in the UK. And that still hasn't really happened in the US.

It's more of a matter of cultural differences as to why it's not exploded. Many are leery of new things, and still are to an extent. I don't think many have known what to do with music that features strange noises and lacks vocals like most techno and trance did in the early to late 90's. Some of the more recent trance (ie 1999 to present) has a sound that's more likely to connect with the average clubber, which would explain why current trance is becoming quite big in the US.

I also happen to be in the muscally isolated upper midwest portion of the US, but it's also ground zero for the rave scene, as one of the local clubs has been one of the first to have DJ's beatmatching and mixing records way back in the 70's. One of this club's residents had spent some time in France in the late 80's and brought back to Madison a lot of the sounds he was hearing at the clubs and raves in Europe, and started throwing raves and some pretty cool club nights. If not for him (Nick Nice, former resident of the Queen in Paris), I may not be typing this right now...

Discuss?

I was into that rave/hardcore/breakbeat sound pre-trance too, but that sound all but dried up here when trance started making it's presence known around 1993.
