In the original days of the 1st cable internet servies they did have a central workgroup in which you COULD browse anyone computer that is on the same segment or node. Since then, at least for @home, they have wised up and disallowed that ability. sure, anyone can hack into your computer...that is a basic risk of having a staticly assigned IP address with all ports open. Even using a modern day firewall doesn't secure you 100%, actually not even close to that. Everyone want the basic poprts open to the internet(i.e. 80,21,20,25,110,119), this alone provides enough access for a hacker to penetrate through the firewall and accomplish his task of destruction. Unless you have a hardware based firewall(in my opinion) you are just as at risk as someone who has no firewall. If a experienced hacker wants to get in....he will. A novice, yeah you'll keep him out, but for how long? Any arguements?
yes, i do this shit for a living
