ALthough I am new and I do know my place (heh, well sorta) I've decided to make myself heard. IMO this issue of banning should come down to a few things:
1. Has the person in question started multiple "flame wars" for no reason at all?
2. Has the person in question just been a plain old jackass
3. Has the person in question avoided the social atmosphere which is condoned by the TA community?
These are the only reasons for banning IMO. Just because someone has disagreed with you before, even in a forcible manner, it doesn't give you the right to ban them.
On the other hand, I have seen a lot of flamewars started in recent months, more than when i was a new TA. I would like to see something done about that. |
Well written post. I fully agree. Yes, sake might have been a little less reserved than he should have been early on, I also think many of the "veterans" jumped at his throat needlessly. In fact, the poor guy even tried to take back his "crappytrance" comment, but it was too late, lol.
I can tolerate the mistakes of a newbie, having been so myself once. LOL, last June I got international TA calls for me being banned cuz I posted in all local forums telling people it was Swamper's birthday. I didn't even think of it that way, but all the "power-posters" in other local forums immediately jumped at my throat calling it spam and asking for a ban.
What I'm trying to say is that it is more up to the experienced TAs to create a good vibe on this board than up to newbies. In the past 6 months, the overall vibe on TA has deteriorated quite a bit IMO. As best I've been able to observe, much of it is actually caused by TA frequent posters whom seem to look for any excuse to start a flame war. That has bugged me for a while now. I'll refer you to my plea back in November that was clearly ignored (of course it was, I was kidding myself thinking people would read it and grow up):

Since when does being here longer give us the right to act like jerks? I don't think anyone should behave this way on this forum, regardless of "seniority". Of course, that's with the exception of age, in which case you should all listen to me.
So, to sum it up, I don't think Sake should be banned, although I would suggest he tone it down a bit. And I also suggest the other TAs to try being a little more welcoming and give the guy a break if he tries to tone it down.
C'mon TAs, let's try and have as good a vibe on the board as we have at our parties, which are still unbelievable! I still have a huge smile on my fact from last week....
