No, what he said was that we define mature by the behaviour of the majority of persons within a society... behaviour deviating from this is considered immature. I'd say Hal missed on important thing though... it's the behaviour of prudent persons governed by reason that we consider mature.

You're getting at the whole "there are no original thoughts" thing aren't you? That really doesn't apply here, as the use of the word imitate requires that the person has directly observed the subject behaviour in another individual and is now repeating it... so if you use a credit card to scratch your ankle and you've never directly observed this action before then you are not imitating it... the fact that many others have solved the problem of an itchy ankle and the inability to reach a finger in their shoe in a similar manner does not mean you are imitating them.
