I explained up above... or in another thread... but I'll give a small recap.

I love that he's nonchalant. Unlike most (seems like Yankee fans are more into this than others ), it doesn't bother me when players are laid back Manny-style. Matter of fact, I prefer them to be. Baseball is a game to me. It should be played and enjoyed as that. And, I think of all the players in the majors, Manny personifies that the most.

but does that mean you don't run out a pop fly? great hitter i don't take that away from him and he's getting 20mil for the season - i've noticed it before but was pretty shocked when they made a big deal of it on tv. especially since it was televised in boston. yea great accomplishments i wont take that away from him. i dunno, i've played ball before and honestly know that ball players who look to the pro's as idols (i did when i played in college) help them shape and model themselves as those role models.

i think most people agree though that he's not the standard bearer for hustle/defensive prowess. everyone just knows he's a hitter.

i guess you can say so, maybe i see it differently cuz i played the sport through college so i was always taught to play hard, run things out, stretch singles to doubles - you know the whole competitive mentality. Then again, getting paid 20mil and not running 1/4way down the line kinda says to me that he doesn't care.

i mean yea he's swinging a bat thats on fire but that's like saying Ortiz is the leagues MVP yet he doesn't play the field?

I'm more of a Cal Ripken/Pete Rose type of player. Those guys are who i model my baseball after.

Totally see what you're saying. This is obviously a case of preference. I prefer fun/laid back players, you prefer gritty/hard-nosed players. Probably the reason why Pedro is my favorite pitcher and not someone like Randy Johnson or Roger Clemens... Although... I do not like Dontrelle. Weird. Probably because he's in my division.

I agree with you 100%, that's always how I feel. Especially having played baseball for 10 years myself and fighting to get that extra base and how important it was at times for your team to win. And I was a coach's son so he instilled that aggressiveness in me.

I love guys like Matsui who is stoic but just goes about his business. Or Jeter who ALWAYS hustles at every opportunity. Manny's nonchalent behavior makes me think he could be even more.

Amazing talent though no question!

so would yankee fans rather have kept soriano or have followed through and traded for a-rod?

I LOVE SORIANO, always have, always will!! So want and what's best for the team might not be the same in this case.

Great play by Jetes though.

There's so many what-if's in baseball. What if Manny tried harder and studied pithcers? He could feasibly be the RH Ted Williams. What if Pedro knew how to "pitch" when he could still throw 97? He used to just blow it by people and now he has to change speeds and pitches constantly. If he was doing that 5 years ago... I don't even want to think about. What if Ken Griffey never got injured? What if Mickey Mantle took more care of himself? So many... I just accept the players for who they are and what they do and try not to think about what if things were different.

The funny thing is that that would totally have changed the face of baseball. The Red Sox may not have even won the WS... who knows.

I was always a fan of Soriano but he his bat wasn't proven like A-Rods is and yes at times A-Rods bat is questionable. He just doesn't lead the team like Jeter does. Granted his bat is proven over Sorianos, I say we just bring Wade out of retirement and have him back in the corner and let A-Rod and Jeter play the middle infield.

owait is that another bostonian in pinstripes?
