You know, that was one of the main things I took from 9/11 - that the US had been in some just oblivious compared to other countries in terms of awareness of terrorism.

Growing up in the UK, you always knew there was a threat of IRA bombs (I even heard one go off) so everyone looked for unattended packages on the tube, or were at least aware of the threat in every day life. Nothing extreme like you were going to die any second, just part of everyday life, and there were protocols in place to deal with it. Maybe it also stemmed from having been bombed in the wars and that becoming part of the psyche, but it's only just in the last few years that the US is having to adjust to that sort of thing.

Some woman was being interviewed on the LA trains and she was saying how she's had to become aware of suspect packages etc. Aside from the main point (wtf is she doing out of the kitchen?), I realized that this is so new to Americans, and that what most developed and undeveloped countries have lived with for generations is only now becoming every day reality.

Having said that, I think if they want to attack, they will find a way. I don't think it will be on that scale again (it was criminal in hindsight how utterly crap security was on 9/11) but something will happen at some point.
