That said, the only aspect where I support a salary cap is to curb the unfair spending of clubs like Chelsea who got their wealth not because of their success but because a big shot bought them over and pumped in tons of his cash which was generated by his business and not by playing top level football. If a salary cap should be generated, then it should only be to the level that, the club can only spend a chunk of what it earns through the revenue that is generated by the club itself which is winnings, marketing and sponsorships.
Sports today are more of a business than a competition where everyone should have an equal opportunity at everything. If it can be done in sports, then why not tell Microsoft and Google that they will only be able to spend the same amount of money as is deemed fair by all other companies competing in the same industry. Just because they have unlimited spending power does not mean that only they should be allowed to hire the best talent.
Salary caps are only being pleaded for by the less successful clubs who are whining about falling attendances and the inability to attract top level talent to their ranks because the fans are more interested in seeing clubs that win. |
It will also mean lower level clubs will always have less funds available, because they aren't as popular as the big clubs and will rarely be able to make it at the top.
Yeah, some clubs do overachieve, but because of their location, they will never have the fan base necessary to generate revenue.
I suggest something akin to MLB is doing. If you spend over the amount set as cap, you have to pay a 'tax' that goes to other clubs's transfer funds.

But these same people bitch when the Yankees go after the best players in the MLB. There shouldn't be some kind of elitist hiearchy in football but there is and so many fans are accepting of it.
