Under your logic, you would believe this hypothetical situation:

Country X wins 50 medals, 13 golds
Canada wins 20 medals, 14 golds

CANADA IS BETTER DOOD!!1111!111

If i´m not mistaken... In 2006 the Canadian men´s hockey team trashed the locker room after losing to Russia in the quarter-finals. Imagine what they would have done if they´d lost the gold-medal game after LEADING 2-0.

The fact that Canada took home the most means absolutely nothing. Why? Because with the progression of Olympic athletes in the last decade or so (examples: Phelps, Ohno, Bolt, etc.), past records mean jack shit because they get broken so easily.

Yes, and no. A silver or bronze medal is a recognition that's better than nothing in an event (Canada knows this pretty well...look at the USA/Canada comparison I made above).

as someone already said - noone is gonna look back and say "oh country X got so many medals in total in 2010", it's "in 2010, country X had the most gold medals"

it's all about:
a. Gold and
b. having the most gold EVER as a hosting country

on both counts we're the winner.
