This is crap. Your personal animus is clearly getting in the way of objectivity here. I would say Kobe is a top 5 player all time, easy. He is the best all around player I've seen since Jordan (Lebron doesn't count yet). Is he so different from Michael Jordan? No. Michael was a PRICK, rarely got along with teammates, even punched Steve Kerr in the face during practice. He had several infidelities (why do you think his wife left him?), major gambling issues, and remembered every slight, real or perceived, against every player in the league as a way to motivate himself and get retribution on the court. I think a major difference is that Jordan didn't play in the era of the Internet, twitter, camera phones, and all that shit that would end up on Deadspin.com in 30 seconds.
We romanticize Jordan when we think of Spike Lee doing the Nike commercials, when we think of Space Jam, and the trillions of endorsements where he was the public face of the league always smiling. But he was one of the most surly, salty, primma donnas in the game and especially on his own team. He couldn't even go out with class in his Hall of Fame retirement speech where he even paid for people to be there just so he could dress them down in public for shit that happened 20 and 30 years ago! The fact of the matter is, most of the great ones are like that... they don't care about anything but winning. And that's why the do it so much. It's not about who can be the most accommodating teammate or who's the nicest/classiest guy... none of that matters. W.I.N.N.I.N.G. That is why Kobe is an indisputable all time great... with the numbers to back it up. Fuck man, I'm a Celtics guy and even I can admit it! |
Don't ever compare Kobe Bryant to Michael Jordan again. Look at Tim Duncan's career numbers vs. Kobe's. They're almost identical, and Duncan's are better in many areas, especially efficiency per possessions. Are you going to say Tim Duncan is a top 10 player as well? Give me a break. People are on Kobe's dick so much because for a large part of his career, he was "the" option. He rarely passed, and as such was taking 30-40 shots per game. You tend to score a lot when you're your team's main option. But look what happened when Kobe had a second option. Who won the MVP's for the championships he won with Shaq? Shaq did. Did you ever see Scottie Pippen, Steve Kerr, or anyone else for that matter winning MVPs when the Bulls made all of their championship runs? Michael Jordan is without a doubt the single greatest basketball player to have ever played the game, and even mentioning Kobe in the same breath as Jordan is an insult to the game of basketball imo. Kobe is without a doubt a great basketball player, but he is most certainly not one of the greatest players of all time.

I'm not arguing that Jordan isn't the greatest player of all time. He is. I'm just saying it's not crazy to say Kobe isn't that far off, and the closest thing to him. Their skill set isn't that different at all. Jordan a slightly better defender, Kobe slightly more range on the job shot. Both 1st team All NBA offense and defense for a decade.
EDIT: Jordan sure as hell couldn't have done it without those fine pieces around him, like Pippen, Kerr, Kukoc, Horace Grant, Rodman, Harper, the list goes on. Dude played with 3 hall of famers at any given time.
BTW- I would put Duncan top 15.

Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Moses Malone, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O'Neal, Oscar Robertson, Bill Russell, John Stockton, Isaiah Thomas, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, John Havlicek, (in no particular order). If you think Kobe Bryant deserves to be ranked (which is stupid anyways) above any of those players, you're an idiot.

What the fuck ever. Oscar Robertson won 1 championship in 9 tries. Jerry West also has only 1 ring. And this is when there were like 8 teams! Dude if you think John Havlicek and John Stockton should even be allowed to hold Kobe's jock strap, you're the idiot. Your hate for Kobe is deluding you man... name me a single GM or coach who would take John Havlicek or John Stockton over Kobe, all of them in their prime! LOL!!!
You remind me of 75 year old football guy who still talks about Red Grange and Johnny Unitas as being "all time greats" when they would get fucking destroyed against today's athletes.
