haha...i guess his june and june stats would have to be similar.

anyway...about cairo...he's a solid utility man, and nice to have someone like him come off the bench. he has a good glove (certainly better than both giambi and phelps) and he seems to be a good situational guy (meaning he'll get the pop fly to the outfield to score the runner from 3rd, he can bunt, etc...). His bat just is not good enough to play everyday first base. But he'll do for now.

the talk about teixeira becoming a yankee has gotten me a little excited, tex is the epitome of a what a first baseman should be. He has excellent power and production numbers and plays a gold glove first base. The only problem is there is no way we could get him without giving up the farm (literally).

sorry bro but i dont agree,,we got enough run support but no good first baseman.....i'd take cairo at first base scoring no runs,,rather than giambi or phelps costing us runs

i don't necessarily disagree with you. I would rather have his defense also, but i would rather the yankees go out an get an actual first baseman with some better offensive numbers. (over keeping giambi, cairo, phelps, and menkiewhatever) I'm not talking about a guy who hits 30 hr a year, but someone with a decent BA and modest power numbers (.280 BA and 15 HR is fine).

Remember cairo isn't a first basemen. In his 11 year career he's only played first base in 39 games. He's a second baseman by trade. And scooping the short hop is arguably more difficult than fielding ground balls.

maybe if they played him consistently in that position his numbers would improve....

to be honest James I'm so close to turning up at Yankee Stadium in my pinstripes and demanding a place in the line up....

when cairo plays a full season he puts up ok numbers. his best season was with the yankees right before he went to the mets, he batted .292 with single digit HR total, i think. But he's a career .260 to .270 batter with very low production numbers. That's why he makes a good utility player to give the big guys a day off.

Actually, im sure you could do better than the bum back up catcher Nieves. What a piece of shit that guy is. He can't hit, throw out runners, or call a good game.

as long as you can walk your fielding is probably an improvement over matsui.

he doesn't have good range, he takes bad routes to balls, and he has a bad first step (meaning he doesn't get a good first read).

and anytime you think he makes a great catch, like a running arm extended catch, there is a great chance that one of the above factors played a role in the catch looking good. Many great outfield plays in baseball are a result of bad initial reaction. you would know this if you ever played.
