Yeah, but these days a lot of players are friends before they get to the NBA, or through other avenues. Wade and Lebron and Bosh all played on the Olympic team when they won the gold medal. Why wouldn't you want to play on the same team as your friends? There's plenty of other people to be competitive with.
Still, it's not like you can just throw any combination of superstars together and they'll be successful. Look at the Knicks. I think the Lebron/Wade/Bosh thing was pretty unique, and they actually fit really well together as a team.
