I can't be an "athlete" because of the lack of required hardware/software to broadcast my mixes. I'm getting my first demos recorded this Sunday after spinning for 2 years, so you can see why I can't participate to compete.
I'd love to become a judge though, if that's possible...thanks!

Count me in for the competition.
I have a few suggestions also. I am a huge stats fan, and I would like to do something like a win/lose/tie stat after your ranking and name. This wouldn't really play into what rank you were or how hard it would be for someone to beat you, ideally, but this way we can keep track of how many competitions we have all been in, and what our record is. That way you can separate a brand new flavor from a long time favorite.
Also, I think that the length should be 30 minutes and that the last track has to start by the 30 min mark or you're disqualified. If we allow djs to do full on sets, then the tracks are going to get really old really quickly. I'm sure that most of us can't afford to buy the amount of records required to keep the judges interested past a few sets that will start having the same tracks in them. People are going to reuse sets over and over, even if they mix them fresh each time. This is why I think that a 30 min time limit, about 5-8 tracks should be the limit.
In addition, I think that this competition should only be open to those who buy their music, so the record label must be included or something to help verify this. And to not be unreasonable, let's say there is a max of 1-2 tracks that are not owned by the dj. If you have to own your music, then this would eliminate MP3 djs that use programs to mix rather than investing money in djing equipment like the rest of us. (Don't get me wrong here, I'm not saying that MP3 djs can't be good, but why should they get to steal their music and not have to buy equipment and still be allowed to compete with those that have paid their dues?) Also, since this IS the amateur Dj forum, I think that if you hold a residency, you shouldn't be allowed to compete.
Anyway, I think that there have been only one or two posts with an "official" tone of the rules of who can compete, who can't compete and what the guidelines for competition will be.
For the actual competition, I think that a 30 min record set that is uploaded to some common space is the way to go. If you do live streaming sets, then that will eliminate most of us, I would think. Those at college with a T1 or T3 connection could do it and it would eliminate anyone with a dialup or dsl or asyn cable. I also don't think that you should have to be required to rent server space to be included either. If this is a purely Dj comeption, then let's not let computer limitations get in the way. Not only that, but time restriction is my biggest deal. I can't spend an hour or two throwing a set together every night. I can do it on the weekends and occasionally during the week, but with full time work and part time school....
I think that you should only be able to be challenged once a week and once you are, then you cannot be challenged again until that challenge is completed. Though to satisfy those with more time on their hands, let us say that you can challenge up to two people per week. Both challenge sets must be different from eachother and only one of the challenges can be for ranking, the other will be to increase that dj's win percentage.
Anyway, I'll stop so that you guys can give your input on my suggestions, and don't forget to add my name to the ladder! Thanks a lot!

This is supposed to be about mixing skills, not how many vinyls you own. The fact that you have "paid your dues" as you put it is certainly important if you want to get a residency, but really has nothing to do with a competition on TA about who has the greatest mixing. I would still respect an MP3DJ who is better than me, because the underlying skills required are the same.
BTW, it's not 'stealing' either. Contrary to what the RIAA will have you believe, copyright violation != theft.

I want in, please put me on the ladder!
Here are my thoughts, in point form to be concise:
- I think the format is great, basic rules stated are acceptable.
- I don't think we should bar professionals, or mp3 DJs as long as they do it "live" of course, no mixmeister or pro tools sequencing.
- I think a website is neccesary before starting competition.
- I think thirty minute sets are a good time limit (meaning last song has to be STARTED before the 30 minute mark)
- I think that either recorded or streaming sets should be accepted. If the mix is recorded, then it should be streamed from the server to the judges so all can hear simultaneously.
- There needs to be some way of addressing cheating.
- I forsee a problem with the time required of judges. I think that we should pick an initial set of judges, and then have a rotating system of letting random competitors judge.
those are my opinions on the process(without going into reasons why for brevity, if you have questions on my reasons, feel free to ask). I think that the next steps are:
- decide where to host site, begin building framework etc.
- finalize the rules.
I may be able to help with the site, i am a website programmer by trade, although i deal with ASP and SQL Server, the concepts of data driven sites are the same. And i've been waiting to sink my teeth into PHP and MySQL too. I'm also willing to pitch in money for hosting. Swamper had an offer that sounded good, high bandwidth and all. If we all pitched in the cost would be small.
There may even be prebuilt ladder systems that would be customizable to our needs.
Anyway, this is a great idea, and i hope i can participate as much as possible.
