It costs a lot if you hire a lawyer, but then it's your lawyer who gets most of the money, not Canadian government. Also, becoming a Canadian citizen it's all that expensive.. As far as I can remember it's around $750.

on the contrary.....

we spent roughly 70,000 dollars moving here ...lawyer was free since it was a relative

i envy those with refugee status here....

taking our tax money, moving to the country all paid byt he govt., getting paid by the guvernment to live here too, no need for bank statements or anythign to be shown....

that must be the life

God Bless America!!

heh but no seriously .. if i had to fight to defend CAnada and the safetyhood of my family, hell yeah i'd fight!

somehow I have trouble believing that. Unless you were *illegaly buying* your landed immigrant papers, I really have my doubts about that $ figure. My family would never make it here(and I'm sure half immigrant TAs would say the same) if it cost that much.

My family would have never made it either!! I think there are ways to get around those huge costs. You have to have sponsors and jobs set up too. I dunno exactly. I'm glad that Poland lets you keep dual citizenship.

I think it also depends what country you are moving from too. I hear that if you are immigrating from China you have to have 20 000 in the bank before Cananda even considers you. I don't know where I heard this from.

Generally to get landed immigrant papers you have to meet certain criteria(good profession, knowledge of english, certain age etc), but if you have $200,000(not sure about the figure) you can get papers without meetnig these criteria because you have lots of money. Note, however, that in this case you still have that money. Nobody takes it away from you.

Why do you think there is sooo many immigrants from Hong Kong here? If you own an apartment in Hong Kong you are as good as Canadian Citizen. [EDIT: To avoid any misunderstanding it's totally cool with me that there is lots of immigrants from HK. As long as you guys can speak English properly so people can understand ya. j/k ]

I'm against accepting refugees though. I don't see the point in that. I think it just increases the amount of people on welfare, but I don't have any evidence to back this up, so I could be totally wrong.

wells this is actually true. it all depends on how much ecomical capital you can bring over here and how old you are when you're immigrating also plays a big role.

As for the refugee thing wells i don't really know the statistics behind that either, but I like most ppl likely wouldn't want refugess living in our neighbourhoods. However Canada as a developed nation has to share the burden with the rest of the developed world to curb the global economic crisis of the developing nations. So yeah I still think we should help out in some way .. how we do it is another question ..

That really should not be a provblem for most of the MArkham peeps anywho, they all own some sorts of factoried in HK anyways.

I have 3 passports, Canadian, EU, and Serbian. Triple Citizenship in the hizzouse.

Now reffering to the enying refugee status remark, I agree %100.
