I thought they had found neanderthal/hybrid species, buried under ice and such. Probably those species just died because they weren't well adapted; think about it, humans would have died off pretty quickly in the last ice age if it weren't for the invention of fire.
Apes survived naturally, humans survived with technology, and everything in between didn't really have what it took to survive. Try to remember that evolution is based solely on survival, it doesn't just happen out of the blue, it occurs for a reason!
We still have single-celled organisms, right? So what's so hard to believe, we don't necessarily have everything along the evolutionary path from an amoeba to a gorilla either... this whole thing is just a silly argument that creationists come up with to make people question known science.
