Hi guys, I'm sorry I haven't been on here for a while; I have so much other stuff going on.

This is an excellent thread, there are some very informative posts here. Thanks to everyone who has contributed. I'm glad you guys take the topic seriously. I started taking it seriously after learning of how my friend is now disabled for the rest of his life.

The Etymotic plugs look interesting, my friend who has tinnitus recommended pine-tree shaped plugs and I think he's referring to these ones. I think I'll get myself a pair.

Etymotic is the producer of some high-end earphones. Their ER-4P and ER-4S earphones are regarded as being in the top-of-the-range of earphones. They cost US$330. People say that their earphones are less likely to cause ear damage than other cheaper earphones. Though of course, that's no reason to be listening continuously for 8 hours per day!

Check out the headfi.org forums for anything to do with headphones, the people on there really know their stuff. It's great when you want to buy some equipment.

After reading this thread I decided to do a search on the headfi forums for "tinnitus", and it returned around 200 threads. For example, have a look at this interesting thread, titled "My ear hurts...":

My etymotic-20s arrived from perth yesterday - typical, they arrive on the monday after the weekend when i really coulda used em They took 10 days to get here.....

Haven't had a chance to try em out properly yet (obviously)....they're a bit uncomfy, but that's probably cos I'm not used to earplugs at all....or maybe I have weird shaped ear canals *lol* But, I'll see how they go

and your right its uncomfortable, i put them in i still hear everthing so thats a good sign :P
hmm well it looks kinda funny, looks like im some kinda freak with things sticking out of my ears?
but i guess its better to be a freak then having your ears blown out

i tried spinning with these - it has no effect what so ever, im able to spin without a problem. (just feels different, maybe cos im not use to them?)

well, good to know i'm not the only one who thinks they're uncomfy........i have a hard time imagining wearin em for a whole nite feeling that uncomfy - but i guess it just takes some getting used to..........and yeah, those sticky out things make me feel pretty stupid *lol* but yeah, not that big of a deal i guess if it means ur savin ur hearing.......

Try using cheapo ear plugs and then these ones and see if they still feel bad, cause i know i didnt like the normal ones when i first started to use them. It was so good to come out of home on saturday morning being able to hear everything

Got my plugs yesterday (wasn't @ work to get them)[4 days].

Will play around with them later. A quick play says they're a little bit uncomfy, but they may of not been in right.

Nice carry case they come in too.

Yeah don't cut off the stems or you will not be able to put them in or take them out properly. You do get used to the feel reasonably quickly. I often forget I'm wearing them. Anyway like has been said a bit of uncomfort is a sacrifice I'm prepared to make.

still havent got mine

Had them in for about 1-2 hours tonight. Putting them in correctly took about 4-5 mins the 1st time. I kept trying/playing till it didn't hurt, and figured that was the spot. Sound reduction is pretty cool.

DJing, can be done.

VS the foam 1's the $35 pair kill it!

Looks, the nobs stick out a bit further then expected, but being clear can't really be seen when the light is off.

So far, a good purchase. Will road test either this weekend, or next (read next time I'm out).
