And you're looking at this the wrong way; Boa is not a "prog" club...it's a house club. Progressive is a sub-genre of house and there's so many varying sounds of house that it won't get stale so fast. They got a plethora of house DJ's which they can bring in. I agree that if week in, week out, it was the same progressive sound, it wouldn't hold up against the already established venues so well. But seeing as how they brought in Sander K for their opening night, and there's already talk of Satoshi and Hernan coming in early 2004, I don't think we need to worry about it getting stale.

Oh, and breaks is a bad example cause most "prog" DJ's spin some breaks nowadays. I'm willing to bet Sander dropped a few breaks tracks.

If Ben were saying "Toronto's most popular genre is progressive" then I'd agree...but he's not, so it's not really relevant to draw the comparison to Montreal. He said the older crowd prefers progressive, which I don't necessarily think is true.

ppl like me all hope for an urban gorilla type club but I sincerly doubt it. Also I wish to point out that some of the A List techno deejays are too fucking arrogant to play Canada. (cough jeff mills...assclown).

I said mature, not old.

From what I've seen and experienced I do believe that progressive/house are in fact preferred as opposed to trance/techno/jungle by the mature clubbing crowd in Toronto. When I say mature I mean mid to late 20s and higher. And people who have been in the scene for some time and have progressed through the genres.

Jeff Mills and who else?
This thread is frustrating...I'm just going to continue hoping that the club also tries to appeal to people outside the prog genre eventually. I can hope, can't I?

Well Sarah...normally it's System that brings in techno deejays. Most techno deejays get the big money to play in Europe and go nowhere else. The Jeff Mills story goes like this, yrs ago, he was supposed to play Turbo (promoter brought him for 3-4 gigs at 6K usd per). Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg were the 3 and I think edmonton as 4th. Anyway Jeff Mills is a known arrogant asshole and ppl took some pics of him and he snapped..saying he would go back home if anymore pics were taken...talk about issues. He was rude to the staff and the promoter himself and basically they never wanted him back. Anyway after the gig, his agent tells the promoter dude that Jeff double the price to 13K usd per gig..he signed a contract for 6K per..ignorant bastard...so he did not show to the other two gigs and went back to the States. He swore that Canada had screwed him royally, which he really screwed himself and swore that he would never play Canada again and to this very day, he has not. Dave Clarke plays here about once every 1-2 yrs and he is coming back...the stories of him are worse...amazing techno dj...pompous ass with a ego the size of russia. Derrick May swore he would never play many gigs in North America again because the critics slammed his 1993 album and he went into production retirement and basically blamed North American critics. Other reason that so many big name deejays play europe for techno gigs is that the crowd are up for it and I'm sure Sarah, if we bugged the right promoters then they would book deejays. I wish Charles K would get off his ass and book may, atkins and may for some gig. Also techno deejays (most of whom are moody assholes...pm me if you wish to know more stories) can get away with their behavior in Europe but not in Canada. I mean Toronto has always been a sit on the fence type town imo...we don't really favor any decent genres..big name dj's...we go see them....I don't think it's about hating techno...i think if enough people bug the promoters or owners of clubs and say book this dj and it can be done that the club will fill...then it will happen.

And if you were there on Saturday, you wouldve agreed with me that this wasnt the "same ol prog crowd" like you'd think this club would attract. Sure, i recognized some familiar faces....but overall the vibe was unlike any club id experienced in a long LONG time. And i agree with Matt that if you bring in wide range of genres they will not establish a regular clientele and it'll end up just being a bunch of sketch bags like there are at The Guvernment. I also think that the $30 admission is a lil steap for those regulars at the The Guv who are just looking for a $10 quick fix of heavy bass and lazers.

agreed... as for admission, i'm pretty sure it will vary on the talent they bring in, so sometimes it'll definitely be worth the extra dough, like this time with sanderrr
