The paying stuff is a bit different. That's normally for companies to use their original artwork/material for their business, so the paid copyright is a registered copyright or a registered trademark for a logo etc.
This means lots more legal stuff.
But basically it comes down to proof of original ownership. Agreed, its best to be registered etc or market, but there used to be a process where artists would seal a copy of their own work in an envelope and thenm send it to themselves, and not open it, so it was datemarked by the post office. With electronic publication the dates andstuff are stored on the jpeg, this is a bit more of a grey area, but he's just being a wanker, basically.
Bottom line is that without legal representation there isn't a lot you can do, however you migt wanna start posting the pics just about everywhere in the world, just to spite her.
