The DJ that has impressed me more than any other to stop through locally is Ferry Corsten. He played in my hometown March 18th, for a show that featured Ronald Van Gelderen, Ferry and Lisa Lashes.

Headliner DJ, plays for huge crowds, every increasing in popularity and what does he do? He hangs out near the DJ area for an hour or more before his set, chatting with fans, signing autographs, having pictures taken, etc.

Nice to see a DJ that knows who is responsible for his paycheque each night.

i remember when a friend of mine was spinning and a cdj AND a tunrtable died. it was a 2 channel mixer, so you had to switch the line/phono to use one thing or the other. the ones that died were both on the same channel, so he actually had a vinyl running, goes around the table, unplugs the CDJ, plugs it in the other channel and repositions it, and keeps mixing for another hour cd <-> vinyl.

damnit, DJs should stop being so damn arrogant (as in the headphone unpluggage deal). max graham spun here and goes to take a piss, and the idiotic local DJ starts playing with the volume fader, taking it out and bringing it back in. just doing stupid shit. max walks up on stage, and just gestures to the crowd as if saying "whats wrong with this kid?" and continues his set.

sander k actually stopped the opnening DJ's last record when he came here. not mix in, he pulled the needle off. some say it was a mistake, and he didn't do it on purpose though. shit set by sander that night btw.

tiesto at roxy last year

hmmm... about that...

i dunno, he was just done. he said he was contracted to play 4 hrs, started at about 2 and at six was all done. i got the feeling he had a hard time connecting that night, and wanted to go get some rest. i am not sure though because i had half a bottle of grey goose molesting my liver and was pretty hazy. so when smiley asked me to go back on i said something like, "gglllllrrrbbbbblllle... sure... play records. right. ok..." i was visibly drunk, and bindra asked me more than once if i was ok to spin, because he would just end it there if i wasn't... i managed to stop slurring long enough to address the mike in the middle (as i was seeing 3 of him)with enough coherency to allay his fears. i mean it would have been worse i think if i got on and was horrible, than if it just ended. fortunately from what i can recall, it went reasonably well, and i played til nearly 8 am.

i have heard a lot of accounts of that night- that he had stormed off, or whatever, but i think it was a little less dramatic than that. he just decided he was done and was on his last record. i happened to stumble by at just that moment. he left, i played. the end.

but then i was really, really, drunk, so maybe i missed a bunch of stuff... who knows?

peace

If your job was to dig the hole for a swimming pool and someone gave you a backhoe that didn't work, would you storm off or dig the thing by hand? The DJ goes to an event expecting that the equipment will be in good working order and I can see why they get pissed if it isnt.

The bad part is that everyone calls them a baby and gets pissed cuz they walked out and noone says shit to the no-name shady promoter that brought in the shite equipment.

Allright djings alot harder then most people think, they look up at teh stage and see the dj doing it and their like "hey thats easy anyone can do it" yea well anyone cant do it, it takes alot of practice getting your ear trained so you can detect the tempo as well as the key that a songs in. Then on top of this you need to know at least some harmonic theory so you dont end up sounding like "the devils ass crack" as one of our ta djs have refered to it.

pro djs have spent alot of time getting these skills and training and they expect certin standereds when they play for themselves and for the equipment they use. It can be fucking hard to mix properly if your constantly trying to get your equipment to work. Would you expect jimi hendrix to play on a guitare thats missing strings and is sounding like shit. i dont think so.

As for tiesto, when he played here in brazil he was really generouse. The power in the place actually went out for a few minuits the sound was shit. Even through this he kept on playing. Even played an extra 30 mins. Just becouse the crowd showed up. Then afterwords he took the time to hang out with some of the fans and shake hands with the crowd (this was in a place with at leaast 3000 people). I got respect for him. Maby he was a dick at other events but i only judge people on my own experance.

Anyways theirs my rant enjoy

ok. Djs are professionals musicians just like any rock group.
they are paid to play their music and express their feeling to the ppl with their music.
SO, you need to supply them with the equipment they need and ask. If any of the equipment is not in good condition or not what they demanded then the contract is broken and they are bound to do whatever they want. if they want to play, play. if not, don't.
Now, that of storming out can be something very frustrating for a crowd but if the dj is not feeling confortable with what he is doing, then why bother doing it.!

Often the case when Tiesto is the headliner.

Marco V stormed out of gatecrasher a couple of years back without even playing. Theyd rearranged his set time during the day and he was supposed to be following Paul Oakenfold, but Oakey asked to be given longer and played on for an hour extra, Marco didn't stand for it and just left the club! They had to get Les Hemstock to play at like 1/2 hr notice and he came on and was excellent!
